We love our stay at Welkam. The room was nice and spacious, the style was a cozy mix of modern and old. The bathroom was very nice with a great shower, and the included breakfast was a nice spread of meats, cheeses, boiled eggs, and sweet bread that hit the spot before leaving. Great value, overall!

An UNWELCOME stay at the Welkam Hotel!

Sadly, the Welkam Hotel was the most unwelcoming establishment at which we have ever stayed! Here is the list of issues we found unacceptable:
1) Everything was closed when we arrived in the middle of the afternoon. We phoned the landlord who insisted that we would have received an email with the details of how to enter the premises. We double-checked our emails — definitely no email. We rang back and only then did the landlord text us the keypad code to get into the building and our room.
2) We had been looking forward to enjoying a pizza at the restaurant downstairs, but it was closed. My husband asked when it was going to open, but the reply was simply that it was closed. (NO mention of this on the website!) My husband also asked if it is closed permanently, but the landlord simply replied, “It’s closed!”
3) After rinsing out some undies in the bathroom basin, I released the plug and then heard trickling water inside the pedestal — water started to ooze out from the bottom all over the floor! (The rust at the bottom of the pedestal indicated that this was not the first time this had happened. There is clearly a connection problem between the drain and the pipe.)
4) The following morning, the shower drain became blocked — I reported it to the landlord at breakfast the day after. He replied that it must be blocked with hair and that he would get someone to attend to it. Interestingly, we have subsequently read a review somewhere that reports the same issue, but for these guests they claimed that they were blamed for blocking it with their hair!
5) When we returned to our room at the end of our second full day staying there (we stayed for 5 nights), our room was filled with a putrid smell that was coming from the bathroom (definitely sewerage!). (We even smelt a similar smell out in the passageway next to the building on one occasion.) We left the bathroom door closed and the window in our room slightly open so that there was a little fresh air coming in, being concerned of the health effects of breathing sewer gases all night! The problem persisted for the rest of our stay, even after the shower drain had been cleared. We informed the landlord of this issue before we left — he seemed surprised and said he had no idea of what could be causing the bad odour. Interestingly, we have read another review that mentions the disgusting odour. This is clearly a persistent problem and one that has been drawn to the landlord’s attention before!!! (We were in room 4 — so be warned!)
6) Absolutely no information was provided anywhere about the times when breakfast is served or what facilities the hotel provides. Fortunately, we thought to ask the landlord when we first arrived. Breakfast was served from 7 to 9am. As we often do at hotels, we continued sitting at our table after breakfast had officially ended (we like to read the news, etc. on our iPads). The landlord still had lots of things to put away, and so we didn’t feel any urgency to leave. However, on the second morning, at about 9:05am, he quite rudely pointed out that breakfast was over. (As a psychologist with over 30 years in the business, I can assure you that this man has very poor people skills!) After that, we promptly left at 9 on the dot on the following 3mornings!
7) On the last morning, after having a friendly chat with the landlord at breakfast, I confirmed that the checkout time was 11am. He informed me that it was actually 10am. Back in our room, we checked the hotel’s website and the Qantas website (through which we had made our booking) — both clearly stated that checkout was 11am. Confidently, I took the iPad downstairs to query the checkout time. I was shocked when he said that that time was correct for people who book directly on his website, but for people who book through a 3rd party, checkout time is 10am! I then very politely explained that our train wasn’t scheduled to depart until 12:30am, and so would we be able to extend our checkout to 11. The answer was an emphatic no, with some vague explanation about it being expensive to pay cleaners…I think he was trying to claim that he would be paying a cleaner to do nothing whilst they waited for us to vacate our room. This is when I lost it — I said an abrupt ‘Thank YOU!’, then turned and left. There had been other guests at breakfast, but they had all left when I enquired about the checkout time — I wondered what time he would have stated, had there been others present. Never before have I heard that guests who book through a 3rd party get penalised like this. I actually think he made this up on the spot!
I do not usually bother writing reviews, but for this hotel, I think that potential guests should be warned that everything may not go well, especially if you are allocated to room 4 and/or book through a 3rd party.

The check-in process was very poor. It relied on an unreliable-looking website that was mostly in Slovak and was difficult to get working (only partly on English). Communication with the hotel was also clumsy, and there was no information provided about breakfast or other practical matters.
The bathroom drain was blocked, causing the bathroom to flood. Housekeeping was also lacking. At the very least, fresh towels and basic room cleaning during the stay would have been appreciated.
It was impossible to make the room properly dark because the curtains let too much light through, so I woke up around 5 a.m. every morning.
The breakfast was good.

Modern and nice room. Very dark bathroom. No full figure mirror in the room and no table of any kind. No aircondition. No elevator. Very narrow parking. Ok breakfast. Not close to anything. Have to drive.
