Calm and clean
Everything a basic traveller needs! It’s very clean and my mom and I had a very spacious room. It’s not a place to meet other travellers, merely a calm place in the rural city of Kuala Lumpur where you can put your mind to rest. Location is also great, super close to China Town.

Denied My Booking – Treated Like a Stranger
I booked a 3-month stay (July–September) at this hostel, managed by VTOC (not to be confused with YWCA, though both share the same building). Here’s my experience:
April:
I arranged a room viewing with Matron Anna (also known as Annie as stated in her WhatsApp), but she couldn’t attend and sent a colleague in her place. I was shown a studio (RM1200) and a single room (RM780), both with utilities included (parking excluded). We continued communicating via WhatsApp, and I finalized the booking with her on June 28.
June 30 (My Off Day):
Since I couldn’t come on July 1 (my contract start date) due to work, I asked Ana if I could come on June 30 to collect the keys. She replied, “I will be in the office at 1:30 PM,” which I reasonably understood as permission to come.
I arrived at 1:10 PM and approached the guard at the entrance, asking if I could park inside as I was there to check in and collect my keys. He allowed me in and made a courtesy call to Ana to confirm. But instead of acknowledging the arrangement, Ana firmly denied I should be there and repeatedly said I wasn’t allowed to come yet.
Inside the Building – Confusion & Denial:
Unsure of what to do, I asked around for help. A kind Chinese lady guided me to the VTOC office, where I met Ana in person for the first time. Her first words to me were:
“Who are you? Please address me as Matron Ana.”
She then denied knowing me, insisting the room had been reserved for an “old lady” and that I was not the same person she had spoken to. Despite calmly explaining I was Tan Lay Chin (Melora) and showing her my IC, our WhatsApp chats, proof of payment, and a video of the April room tour, she refused to acknowledge the truth.
She avoided eye contact the whole time, looking down at her phone while scrolling through our actual WhatsApp conversation — where she could clearly see my name, profile photo, and the messages we exchanged. Still, she continued saying, “You’re not the person I expected.”
To make things more confusing, during her repeated denials, I mentioned that I was recommended by a previous tenant. She asked, “Who recommended you?” and when I gave their name, she immediately said, “Yes, I know them.” That only reinforced that she had been speaking to me — yet she still rejected that fact.
She even refused to answer a WhatsApp call from me in real time, despite clearly seeing my number and photo on the screen in front of her.
Abrupt Switch in Tone:
After going in circles, her demeanor suddenly shifted. She became polite and smiley, without ever admitting fault or explaining the confusion. She said,
“I’m just worried the old lady might show up and have no room.”
I calmly repeated — again — that there was no old lady, that I had come months ago to view the room on her instructions, and that I was the same person throughout. She did not address any of this directly.
Finally, she told me to return on July 1 with my IC and photo to officially collect the keys.
Important Notes for Future Tenants:
• VTOC and YWCA are separate organizations, with different management and pricing. Don’t confuse the two.
• Matron Ana manages VTOC, and based on this and other reviews, she has a track record of miscommunication, defensiveness, and mistaken identity.
• Staff (including the guard) acted overly protective and procedural — making the experience feel more like a checkpoint than a check-in.
• Be prepared to document everything: WhatsApp screenshots, video recordings, IC, payment receipts — you’ll likely need them.
This was a stressful and unprofessional encounter. I was only treated respectfully after going through multiple hoops to prove who I was — despite having already paid and communicated everything clearly. If you value peace of mind, I do not recommend this place.

YWCA boutique hostel: Terrible place
I have been staying at the YWCA boutique hostel for nearly 3 months now. I moved out on the 25 October, just shy of 2 weeks to the 3rd month in part because the place is terrible! The day (16 October) after I had gone on to view another place to move to I highlighted to the general manager about the conduct and behaviour of one of the residents (whom interestingly was allowed to stay at the boutique hostel beyond the maximum 3 month period at a rate of only MYR600!). If you check the YWCA website it clearly says that the maximum tenancy is 3 months and at MYR50 a night. And I paid MYR1300 every month via Agoda for my nearly 3 month stay there. There are currently only 3 people staying at the boutique hostel, ie., the matron and 2 teachers (who are teaching at a nearby school). With the exception of my room, the rest of the 9 rooms are empty! Yet Interestingly on Agoda, YWCA keeps advertising the rooms at the boutique hostel as being the last! The teachers are sharing a double room at this boutique hostel. Since the implementation of the 2nd (Covid) MCO (from October 12 to 27) one of the teachers did not like the toilet door banging, as her room is just directly opposite her room. The toilet door bangs when one does not prevent the door from swinging, the laws of Newton! On the 18 October, the teacher, not able to withstand the noise of the toilet door banging, rushed out of the toilet with a glass bottle and right in front of me slammed her room door with the glass bottle! There were other issues about this teacher which I highlighted to the management. Amongst them, a video recording of this particular teacher screaming in the meeting room (which is adjacent to my room) and which woke me up, door banging as this teacher walks in and out of her room every few seconds just to wash a cloth in the toilet and eavesdropping. Sadly, despite the numerous CCTV installed all over this boutique hostel, the general manager send me a Whatsapp message on 19 October saying that the management was not happy about these complaints and asked that I leave the hostel, with them processing the remaining refund back to me. Knowing that they are not honest I told them to revert back to Agoda on their decision to cut short my stay and refunding back my balance. Despite highlighting to the general manager on the conduct and behaviour of this teacher (with the CCTV evidence and even the video recording which I took), it was all dismissed with excuses like that particular teacher has been staying at the boutique hostel for well over 2 years and on the day she screamed in the meeting room, the excuse was that she was stressed! There is an organization which rents one of the rooms at the boutique hostel (although they are rarely in). Whenever they conduct meetings at the meeting room, they are civilised. And they conduct their meetings with the meeting room door closed and at hushed tones. Other concerns which I had during my nearly 3-month stay there (and which I had also highlighted to the management and which I doubt were looked into as there were no improvement) was the matron banging her room door and that of the teacher’s room door whenever I was in the shower. She would bang the door every day just when I am about to go into the shower or bang the doors when I am in the shower. The matron would also walk in and out of her room whenever I was in the pantry washing my dishes. This was the most obvious and for as long as I was in the pantry using the water she would just walk in and out of her room, banging her room door each time! She would walk into the bathroom for a few seconds and then walk back into her room and walk out of her room again and then walk into the meeting room (which is just opposite her room) until I finish washing the dishes. This became a pattern every day!
On my second day of my stay at this boutique hostel, the matron (literally) came out from her room and with a bucket of clothes in her arms, she stood at the sink (where I was) and glared at me whilst I used the water. The day before, the matron told me that I should not use too much water! On my 3rd day of my stay at this hostel I found poo and pee floating in all 4 toilet cubicles and interestingly it was floating there for 2 days, which the matron chose to ignore since she showers in the bathroom that’s adjacent to these toilet cubicles. I had to flush the toilet when I went into one of these cubicles and it was disgusting. What got me angry was that after I had flushed the poo waste in one of these toilets, someone would go back into the toilet and poo again and leave the poo there. Despite highlighting this to the management and despite the numerous CCTV cameras, the management never made any effort to find the culprit or did anything about this because just 2 weeks ago and again, one of the cleaners came up to me and told me she found black poo which had already hardened and floating in the toilet. She found it disgusting. The entire toilet / bathroom stanked because of the un-flushed poo! Another concern that I had was the matron walking into my room whenever I was not in, to switch off lights and air-cond (even if I am out of the room for a while)! When I highlighted this to Agoda in my 3rd week of my stay there, the management at the boutique hostel came knocking on my room door and asked me about the complaints which I made to Agoda and told me there and then to move out! I was not happy about this and told them that I paid MYR1300 via Agoda and am not staying for free! One of them had the cheek to tell me that the YWCA boutique hostel does not receive the MYR1300 and that by the time Agoda deducts everything they receive less than MYR1300! I was thinking either she’s lying or she’s not aware of how much profit she makes each month from me! Then there was the utilisation of the toilet by the teachers as though that was their food dump. They ate their meals in their room and then use the toilets as their disposable dumpster! One time the entire toilet stanked of garlic as they threw their garlicky food into the bin and toilet bowl. Then there was the issue of the hall and pantry lights. The matron would switch off all the lights except the ones outside her room leading up to the toilet making it dark when walking from my room to the toilet. Yet when I switch on some of the hall way lights as I can’t see in the dark (one time) she just glared at me and switched them all off!
