Doable but kind of eerie
We arrived in the middle of the day and had to wait 30 minutes for someone to check us in, even after notifying another employee as soon as we showed up. The location is on the outskirt of downtown, not bad but you won't get places unless you have a mode of transportation.
The restaurant was closed and probably has been since the pandemic. Frankly, the hotel appeared to hardly be operating from the outside with the lights off and not a soul in sight. Would've felt much safer if there'd been a key card scanner at the front entrance since the hotel and surrounding area was kind of eerie in the evening.

Not the best choice

Basic and Over-Priced
It's overpriced for what you get but it is convenient for the bus station and the Thai consulate but not much else.

Hotel is ok but the dining aspect could improve a lot.
I have stayed here twice for 2 nights. In 2018 and 2019.
Communication with the hotel via email is a breeze and they usually respond within the day.
I think it is 800 baht a night walk in rate.
Reception always has a good English speaker working and check in is easy.
There is a lift and also free wifi throughout the hotel.
The rooms are fine really. Similar to what you would get for the same price range in Thailand.
There is a kettle for coffee. 2 bottles of water each day. No safe box that I remember. Balcony. My TV was fine and had no issues. You get Thai TV channels via a digital box coming in the AV input. Hot shower. Soap and stuff.
I had 2 pairs of random thongs/shoes in my room that I thought perhaps the housekeepers forgot but they were there throughout my stay.
Rooms are cleaned daily and housekeeping are very nice and happy.
Now a lot of the experience of this hotel revolve around the dining side of things as after you check in that is where all your staff interaction will be each day.
My first year here I had no problem. I do remember the staff would stare at me blanky quite often. The demeanour of the restaurant staff is a little bit odd. They seem very scared or shy or something. I understand they may not understand English much but this seems different.
Anyway the restaurant only has Thai/Laos food apart from Eggs and toast in the mornings.
The coffee is quite rough.
Tea - They only offer green tea.
Banana - Chocolate shake is quite nice.
My first night I ordered the Tom Yam fried rice which was delicious, red, spicy and flavorful. So I ordered it again the next night and they send a normal fried rice. The waiter told me it was Tom Yam and with a big smile happily agreed it had no chilli and was not good. There seems to be no training or manager to resolve any issue.
Really it should be changed or taken off the bill but don't expect that here. Twice I paid for things that I did not order. I am pretty easy going and don't make a fuss but it certainly affects my decision to stay again.
Also about 2.30am I was woken by an Asian guest (not Laos maybe Vietnamese) knocking on the door of a nearby room for about 7 minutes until the guy finally opened the door to hear he wanted access for some reason.
I don't think the hotel is unsafe at all but perhaps familarise yourself with where to get help if you need it.
Location is a 5 min walk from the bus station and a 15-20 min walk to Thai immigration. It is an ok walk and taxi is not really necessary unless your old perhaps.
Taxi to Aura from the border is 25000 kip or 200 baht maximum.
The place called Avalon is the same as Aura in that they are 2 different businesses that share the same building. Similar rooms etc.
Overall this place is ok but the lack of resolution to simple problems in dining area has spoiled my view of the place a bit.
Also they do run a bike tour from this hotel I believe.
