The little hostel at the end of the galaxy

Blönduos is not the most obvious tourists' destination in Iceland, but my friend and I felt very welcome there thanks to this hostel, and its very friendly owner.
The house is located in the old village center, with its interesting ancient buildings and the very useful café / pub / local shop / knitting workshop at its heart, and is only few steps away from the magical place where river Blanda and its flocks of waterbirds meet the Atlantic.
The rooms and shared bathroom have been refurbished few years ago when the current owner took over, and as a result, they are very cozy.
We appreciated having a fridge and coffee machine in our room, receiving advice on things to do and to see during our stay, and even getting great help with our luggage.

Quiet hostel with a wonderful view

My husband and I stayed in Riverside Hostel when we came to visit our daughter who lived in the old girl school right on the other side of the water. We didn´t expect hight standard because of the price and hostel standard but were pleased with the room and the house. There were several other quests but it was quiet and peaceful all the same. Most guests made their dinner and breakfast in the kitchen, which was well equipped. We had announced our arrival and got the roomnumber from the owner. The key was in the lock and there was no inconveniance with this simple check in, All in all we had a plesant stay.

Not many amenities

This hostel has good Wifi and a shared kitchen. The person at front desk at Hotel Blanda was very welcoming. However, there is a shared bathroom and no soap in the shower. Some rooms are cramped and the beds were uncomfortable. There are no sinks in the rooms. There are few electrical outlets. Overall, I would say this hostel has the most basic amenities, but nothing more. It's ok for students but not so good for families or older travelers. It's not a good value for the price.

Clean, spacious and well equipped

I'm born and raised in Blönduós but haven't lived here since 1985. This trip was a visit to participate in my grandmothers 90 birthday. It was quite nostalgic to be here and experience these old houses taking ona totally different function then back in the days.
We stayed two nights in Gamla posthusid which means the old post office. And I remember when this place was a post office. Now the place is called the Riverside Hostel. We rented two rooms as we were a family with two teenagers. The rooms vary in sizes but had both two 90cm broad beds that could be placed together for a double bed.
There are bedside tables, a chair, hangers and a small shelf or table in each room. The location is just by the riverbank of Blanda and the view is perfect for watching sunset and the powerful ocean.
We just needed a place to sleep and for that this hostel is just fine. Actually some of the other guests cooked their meals in the kitchen which is fairly good equipped. One could store items in the fridge.
There is some strange smell in the rooms but a few drops of thieves essential oil removed it completely. There are two toilets in the first floor and one shower. And only one toilet and one shower on the second floor. Unfortunately one of the wc's was out of order.
Breakfast is supplementary and we didn't buy it but went to Kiljan instead. See my review on Kikjan guesthouse.
Even though the check in is at Hotel Blanda - 50 m down the road the service (when needed) was very helpful and kind.
I would stay here again for that same purpose.

The worst experience

The hotel charged me €40 too much, which they said that they paid pack. It's now been a month and I still haven't seen my money. They didn't seem to take any responsibility for it when I was there either. Doubting that I'll ever see that money again. Room was alright for a night, and the guy in the reception was nice. Not €40 nice though. Would only stay again if I got paid, €40 preferably. Horrible experience after all
