Review of our experience at the Restaurant-not the hotel in general.
Food: Above average. It was one of the better meals that we have had in Spain. Even the dessert was original.
Service: Decent. Fine.
Atmosphere: In general very nice, especially outside in the patio. The weather was perfect, there was an awning, the view is great, the floor is slate. The only thing that marred the nice experience was that the employees children were playing in the restaurant and it spoiled an otherwise tranquil setting. I am extra sensitive to such noise, and I am sure that many people would not be bothered, but I was, and it reflects poorly that the staff and management does not have enough sense to maintain a quiet atmosphere, especially when it comes from their own kids. Unfortunately this is all too common in Spain, where there tends to be little to no awareness of noise pollution.
Value: We had a set meal for 10 €, which considering the quality of food and beautiful setting (only problem the playing kids) is quite competitive. However, we ordered a 2 liter plastic bottle of water (normally about .25 Euros in a supermarket) and the price was an outrageous 7 meal it is a good/decent value, but once you start ordering a la carte, prices are exploitative and unreasonable.
In sum: Nice dining experience and a good value for the set meal, except if you order a la carte, and the kids playing bothers you.

Charming, but avoid Mondays
When we arrived the hotel it seemed pleasantly quiet and on the face of it the place looked good. However, we were met by someone (possibly the owner) who seemed to me that we were neither expected or really wanted. It's understandably difficult to converse with someone who doesn't speak your language & vice versa, but made especially more difficult when you don’t seem expected. After giving over a copy of our booking confirmation we watched uneasily while he scanned through several pages of his register without finding our reservation, before whisking the confirmation & our passports away into a drawer. After finding a key he lead us to our room.
The room & bathroom were reasonably sized, adequately furnished, clean & well presented. The view from the room was brilliant, across the town and the view of the sunset behind the mountains in the distance stunning. After unloading the remainder of our luggage from the bike then changing out of our riding gear, we endeavoured to find out if the restaurant & bar were open. After another difficult discussion with the owner (?) we came to understand that that they were not. What the reason was we could not fathom, but it may have been due to it being Monday (?) or the fact that they seemed to have family staying. However, he did manage to give some directions, drawing on our map the location of some other restaurants within a short 10 minute walk. So we settled in and watched the TV for news of the Royal birth. When the news came through I endeavoured to raise some drinks for us and his other guests to toast the birth but we were again met with negativity. I asked about breakfast and was told 8am in the dining room.
It was a short pleasant walk up to the local bull ring, which was open & where there are 4 restaurant/bars all very reasonably priced.
In the morning we went down for breakfast and with the usual language problems learnt that it wouldn’t be until 9am. At that point we decided to give breakfast a miss, pack up quickly, pay for our night’s stay and leave, and find breakfast elsewhere in town.
In short the Hotel Los Duques is charming, is clean & tidy and very reasonably priced. The rooms overlooking the town are particularly good. The facilities are simple and there is free wi-fi, and I’m sure that on days other than a Monday, the restaurant would be good too.

Room With a View
The rooms, whilst not being the standard of major hotel chains were very comfortable, clean and secure. We were offered assistance with our bags which we didn't need but thought it was a nice gesture for a small rural hotel.
Unfortunately the restaurant was closed the day we arrived which was a Monday, but we were told about another one just up the road two minutes away.
There was a covered car shelter for cars in a small car park and there was plenty of room between the spaces which is good for opening of doors not like the squeezed ones in many hotels back home in Britain.
We stayed at this hotel on our way down through Spain and our way back up as well and on the latter the restaurant was open and we enjoyed a lovely meal from a good varied menu at very reasonable prices, for both the food and drinks.
There is free wi-fi which is convenient for those who require to keep in touch with friends and home, the hotel part does not even require a password and the restaurant does but it given freely with no problems
On the whole we were very satisfied with this charming little hotel, the weather unfortunately was not as warm as it usually is in Spain, but that aside we would have no hesitation in going back there in future visits.
