A place so inspired and inspiring.
Facing the bay of the Priory, nestled in the most beautiful setting, with the corsair city of St. Malo on one side and the elegant Dinard with its sumptuous Belle Époque houses on the other, Haute Guais is a breathtaking aristocratic residence built in 1880. It thus possesses the unique and charming allure of period homes where a certain opulence reigned. However, using the imperfect tense is not very legitimate in this case, as it was recently purchased by the Bucaille family, owners of the magnificent Castelbrac in Dinard; this dream house has been completely renovated, and it is Sophie Bannier, director of Castelbrac and also an incredibly talented decorator, who has been entrusted with the task of giving a new life to Haute Guais so that a few ultra-lucky guests can feel "at home."
In our opinion, Sophie has created a masterful work in decorating these 5 keys, exquisite cocoons of comfort, elegance, style, and atmosphere. Elisabeth, Henrietta, Charlotte on the first floor; Diana and Victoria on the second... These are great personalities of the British royalty who inspired the decorator to create a universe comparable to that found in grand English residences, adding here and there a touch of intelligent eccentricity reminiscent of "Kit Kemp" (the owner and decorator of the British hotel group Firmdale for those who are not familiar with the reference). The result is absolutely fantastic, and beyond the dream rooms and suites, the lounges, dining room, and orangery irresistibly invite one to indulge in a sort of guilty pleasure that is so soothing for the soul and spirit. Once again, the decoration is just right and deeply alluring, and I admit to having spent several hours moving from one armchair to another to better observe each angle, each perspective, each detail... and of course, this view of the ocean that one can never tire of. All around, an immense park bordered by hydrangeas and its secret path leading down to a wild and private beach. Haute Guais, with its charming decor, unique atmosphere, and small privileges, clearly makes it one of the most delightful guest houses in the hexagon, but probably also one of the most refined in the world.
The guardians of this little temple of happiness and good taste are none other than former staff from Castelbrac. She was a governess, and he was a maître d' at the starred restaurant. Eva and Emmeran welcomed us with all the sweetness, kindness, and passion one can imagine in such a place, but their endearing personalities and their desire to offer guests a little piece of this beautiful house far exceeded our expectations. They are simply wonderful, present without being intrusive, always available and attentive, even going so far as to send a little message after departure to suggest a few last ideas for discovering the best of the region. Every morning, they invite you to join the guest table for a breakfast that is as beautiful as it is delicious, made up of regional products of the highest quality, all equally delightful. The only small downside: the orange juice is not made from freshly squeezed fruits, but we enjoyed ourselves and loved this authentic atmosphere of sharing with the other guests.
These moments of sharing can also take place during a dinner at the guest table for a gastronomic experience from Tuesday to Saturday. Unfortunately, we were there on a Monday and could not discover the cuisine of Remi Ledauphin, but according to the reviews from the guests we met, the cuisine of this young chef is exquisite and inspired, and the menu price is a true opportunity. So it will be for next time, but in the meantime, we recommend the fish market-restaurant Le pic à bulot, offering a seafood cuisine full of freshness.
After having a final drink in the honesty bar and contemplating the idyllic sunset over the bay of the Priory, you will joyfully return to your room, which is necessarily in harmony with the remarkable aesthetic that reigns over the entire estate. For this first time, we discovered Elisabeth and Victoria, two sublime gems with optimal comfort featuring excellent and wonderful bathrooms. It is difficult to leave the bed in the early morning, but upon opening the window, the view of the sea unfolding before our eyes and the divine sea breeze create a moment not to be missed.
So what more can be said other than to thank the Bucaille family for being so visionary in bringing this divine forgotten place back to life. Thank you to Sophie Bannier for having created the most sensational decor that this villa could dream of. Thank you to Eva and Emmeran for being the most delightful guardians of this unparalleled living space, and thank you to Nature for having created such a remarkable setting.
We are, without any desire to boast, passionate travelers of exceptional places and have had the chance to discover many of them. We are therefore hardly surprised or impressed, but the Haute Guais villa literally transported us into this little magical world where we are already eager to return.
