Magnificent

Having come for a short stay in Carcassonne, we dined and spent one night at the Hôtel du Roy in Carcassonne … Magnificent establishment, very cozy room, comfortable bedding, superb bathroom …. A breathtaking view of the Old Bridge and the citadel from a lovely balcony filled with jasmine. Restaurant in tune, service as discreet as it is efficient.
Great stay!

If you like dirty rooms and dog hairs, you get a nice view!

First warning is the tatty signage.
Second total refusal to offer parking and repeated emails to check in online.
Very annoying.
Room - mould in bathroom (which is open to room) inc bath which takes a hour to fill and the plug needs to removed with a spoon ….
Dog hair everywhere….
Only redeeming feature was the view!
Bar dark and dingy as was the gym and restaurant.

Find some place else to stay

Dated furnishings and grumpy staff (except
Marie who was funny and kind.)
The bartender was exceptionally rude both evenings and became angry when I asked (in French!) for a cosmopolitan for which he had all the ingredients but simply did not feel like making.
Skip the breakfast buffet trough—the Nepresso machine didn't work properly and when I asked a staff member for a cappuccino (in French) he seemed genuinely perplexed, but finally after 20 minutes and another request I received some coffee with hot milk! ‍♀️
For reasons that were unclear to
us, we got placed in a handicap room and the shower was in full view of the bed?! We had to hang both robes over the glass shower door so we were not in full view of
the room. The room decor was hideous and so dated!
What was good about this hotel? The view (if you ask for one) is quite nice.

Not 5 star

This is not a 5 star hotel! It’s a 4 star. The cleanliness is questionable and the staff are not very attentive. We came down for breakfast at 9am, breakfast finishes at 10 am
for context. Every table was full of dirty plates etc and left us with no where to sit. I asked a waitress if she could clear a table for us. She proceeded to place the dirty crumb filled place matts on the guest chairs. Sprayed the table off and left. No clean cutlery which we ended up searching for our selves. We then proceeded to place the place matts back on the table and sweep the crumbs from our chairs. The continental breakfast buffet had no butter or available hot water to make tea etc. the garden area which has stunning views was not well maintained which seemed such a shame. We are fairly easy going and relatively relaxed, however, when you book 5 star there are basic levels of service and comfort that are usually standard throughout 5 star hotels.

An ordinary experience

A very beautiful view for an ultimately ordinary experience. We would have gladly paid more for a more polished experience.
