Great experience and value. Jim, the owner, was amazing.
Great experience! I visited Canakale, at age 59, with my 22-year-old son. The Turkish owner-operator, “Jim” greeted us warmly, upgraded our room for free, helped us plan travel. Impeccably clean. Well-maintained. Jim offered to do laundry for free. Easy walk to waterfront. Great value. Less than half the cost of similar hotels. I highly recommend.

unsafe building and violent behavior of the owner
The owner talks incessantly and lacks control of his temper. He destroyed one of my belongings in a fit of rage and threatened my safety without any excuse. I could not recommend staying there.
1. When we arrived at the accommodation, we found it rather below our expectations. The accommodation was not a hotel. The rooms he lets are part of the owner's house. The front lobby was cluttered with inappropriate objects and looks unfinished and messy.The principal picture on the advert on the booking.com website is not of the property. It is a composite image of the Trojan horse on the seafront of Canakkale with the owner's sign "NR1" superposed on it. Our room was supposed to have its own balcony and terrace. However, we discovered our balcony was shared with another guest room with a barrier in the middle and the size of our part could barely accommodate 2 standing people. The electric kettle was stationed in the landing hall to be shared among all the rooms on our floor. However, we did have a separate fridge although it was also stationed on the landing.
2. The owner specified a misleading card payment method to booking.com. Only cash payment is accepted. After paying cash to the owner, the owner promised to give the change to me later, but I never got the change..
3. The building is not fire safe because the owner blocks the fire escape by using the only stairway for storage and drying sheets
4. The owner told me in a WhatApps message that some electric equipment could not be used in my room for fire safety reasons. I followed his message and my understanding was that the landing hall was not part of my room, considering that his electric kettle and our fridge were in the hall. When he saw me using my personal travel electric soup maker in the hall (a plastic thing smaller than his electric kettle) through his video surveillance camera, without listening to a single word of my explanation, he smashed my soup maker immediately. Then in an aggressive fit of temper he demanded we check out immediately at around 9 pm. Where could we find a room in a foreign city at that time of the day?
5. When we did not pack up our belongings, he marched into our room and forcefully grabbed several of our cases and threw them into the hall in a pile. When he violently manhandled my 70 year old husband and caused a long cut on his arm, I used the Turkey nation emergency number and called the police. Two police officers in a police car came. After listening to both sides of the story, the senior police officer instructed the owner to let us stay that night. Before following the police officer's instructions, the owner searched my suitcase and took away my electric travel kettle.
We slept that night in a state of anxiety and got up unusually early the next morning because we preferred the safety of the waiting hall of the Canakkale coach station to remaining in that property. As a 63 year old woman, I have travelled to more than 45 countries, All that time I have never met such an aggressive host, never called the police before and hope I will not have to do so in the future.
The owner has a manic personality. He talks aggressively all the time, was unable to control his temper and proved violent. He deliberately smashed one of my belongings and threatened my husband. We did not feel safe.

Unsafe - potential to be a death trap in a fire event
Although we were shocked to find out the messy building frontage of airbnb-like rooms --- not a hotel at all, we were more concerned that the solo owner was disregarding fire safety regulations and risking the safety of guests staying there.
There is a lift in the building. The entrance to the fire escape stairs at the ground floor level was not accessible from the entry hall. The owner was also using the whole stairway as a storage space and drying area for hotel laundry. This means that the fire escape stairway was blocked on several levels by sheets and other items hanging from the ceilings of the stair steps.
In the event of a fire, the place would be a tourist death trap because the blocked stairways could cause confusion and hamper escape access.
