Positive from beginning to end.
We wanted something more intimate than a hotel for our recent stay in Savannah and we got it at the Thomas Weihs Haus, 222 E. Gwinnett. It is a delightful inn with wonderfully appointed rooms in a quiet neighborhood not far from all the historic area sites. A highlight is the great two-course breakfast you are served each morning. You sit at a large dining table and immediately begin talking with the other guests. When you leave, you feel as if you've made a bunch of new friends.

Do not stay here
Let me start by saying my family owned a B&B for 20 years so I can speak from experience. It is in Lenox, Massachusetts and hosted many principal musicians performing at the Tanglewood Music festival. The guest always came first, no matter what has occurred. You are renting a room to them. Contributing to your livelihood.
The Thomas Weihs house and garden are beautiful in the historic district of Savannah. Some of the restoration details could have had a bit more close attention to detail, like spilled paint around the edges of the carriage house bathroom and stairs. I mention this because the co-owners, Michael and Gerald overly emphasize the need to respect their home and they post many signs around the premises that warn you of fees (fines) for not compulsively being aware of their rules. There are chains erected to direct you through the garden, codes for doors instead of keys and cameras everywhere. Michael a graduate with a hospitality degree is courteous and quite an accomplished historian and cook who prepares delicious breakfasts each day. Gerald with his degree in psychology takes care of the home, grounds and security. He seems to monitor the computerized door locks and video cameras quite intensely. Also since we had arrived, Gerald never greeted us or talked to us without us greeting him first. He was cold and distant.
The first issue occurred when my partner used the front door to access the home to acquire a cup of coffee at the coffee bar in the dining room while waiting for breakfast. Gerald came out of the kitchen area and strongly stated "you didn't lock the door!" My partner apologized but Gerald already went to lock the door. He yelled, "this is my personal home and continued to scold her for not locking the door." He went back into the kitchen and was loudly yelling at Michael how this was disrespectful of his home and him. I heard this outside on the porch.
The following morning my partner again went through the coded front door, locked it and proceeded to the coffee bar. She opened the door to the porch to deposit her iPad and Gerald comes barreling out of the kitchen after observing on his computer the door opening. He begins yelling, "Ma'am, you again are being disrespectful of our home. Michael is the only one who can open this door!" My partner did not understand what she did wrong and said she just wanted to get coffee. The conversation continued and for a few seconds and he said we needed to leave now without breakfast. My partner cursed at him and we left within 15 minutes.
Yes there are two sides to every story, but no business owner should try to be so controlling and rude to a guest. His partner Michael made no attempt to apologize either time, basically supporting this bad behavior. We have both traveled extensively and have never been treated so poorly and disrespectful. Gerald is one of the most angry and rude persons we have come across. Gerald should not be hosting a B and B.

Thanks for your response and review. As an owner of the Bed and Breakfast we normally do all we can to make your stay pleasant and that sometimes means only one owner greets the guest. However, as a mixed African American with a Masters degree in psychology as you stated, I can immediately identify passive aggressive racism from guests and I normally stay clear so they can enjoy their time during their visit. Examples of your behavior include, expecting and being offended- as I am working -(your words) for me to greet you; complaining daily to Michael the WiFi is slow; rudely shewing or directing Michael to leave abruptly as if he was working for you and he was a slave; not apologizing after directly lying you didnt leave the door unlocked in violation of the safety policy you agreed with when there are cameras monitoring the area, etc. I say all these things because, if you evaluate your conduct as stated and after violating the policies your statement is the guest is always right, everyone in hospitality knows you did something wrong and the issue- not the property owners. Lastly, as a prior military veteran who actively served in dangerous areas, I never compromise the safety of guests while they are in our care - even those who dont like us. While Savannah and the area we live in is safe, it only take a second for it not to be and as a B and B owner, I would think you could appreciate that instead of posting negative personal attacks because of your racism.

We would not recommend staying here
We stayed in the carriage house and it had shoddy and sloppy renovations including extensive paint spilled on the tile floor. There was a bizarre amount of signage telling us what not to do or we would be fined. We counted 10 in our room. One of the employees/owner? who did the gardening was the rudest person we have ever encountered in our many travels in the USA and numerous countries. The first day my husband stepped on some grass in the back yard and was told "the grass won't grow if you keep stepping on it." The next day that "grass" was actually replaced in its entirety by sod. There was no reason to criticize my husband. The following day, my husband was bringing in two rental bikes to lock them behind the fence in the very back with all their tools and refuse containers. He left the gate open while he was going in and out and was rudely scolded for it by the same man who is apparently a co-owner. I imagine it's not unusual to rent bikes to see beautiful Savannah and we were trying to keep the bikes safe. We were not made to feel comfortable in this establishment. We felt unwelcome. I'm not surprised to see other reviews from people who have had the same treatment.

In the four years since we started our Bed and Breakfast, we noticed the commonality of negative reviews from likeminded individuals. Many seem to not understand, appreciate, and or respect the concept of a Bed and Breakfast and they cannot appreciate it is someone's personal home. The others are angry because they violated the rules and are mad they were held accountable. It's disappointing because as you can see with your post, both applies. First, the property is 140 plus years old and you booked your to stay in the carriage house, not the main house. Second, the garden and grass are always magnificent! It is because the "rude African American" owner takes a lot of pride in the property and his garden. I'm pretty sure most would find it a bit inconsiderate when the yard it is being prepared for sod the following day and someone walks and rides their bike over the area. Plus, leaving the gate open when you enter and exit is never acceptable. Third, we don't store rental bikes because we don't have the space or ability, and it would also be considerate to ask if it was ok before storing them and moving someone's personal tools. While perception is relative, sometimes the reason a person feels someone else is "rude" or "unhospitable" is because they personally lacked decency, respect, and consideration as they filled the role of the guest. While you may not hold a mirror up to your behavior so you can be a better human, please know we appreciate you not being a guest in the future. And BTW, all hospitality properties have signs posted. Normally those who are respectful guests are not bothered. It's only those who are not respectful cry wolf.

Spectacular visit!
I spent a lot of time researching our Savannah vacation and where to stay. At first I considered staying on River Street but realized I wanted to be near Forsyth Park for a more relaxing stay. Then I began to research Bed & Breakfast places and came across the Thomas Weihs Haus. I am so happy I chose this elegant and historic B&B for so many reasons.
First, Location. I loved the ability to be close to the park, local grocery store, and walkability to the best restaurants. We were also steps away from the free purple DOT bus as well as the Old Town Trolley stop which we used to tour the city on our second day. Plus River Street and Jones Street (very pretty street) was easy to access too.
Second, Amenities. Our room, the Virginia Lloyd Suite, was incredibly beautiful and spacious. The decor was lovely, linens and towels were so nice, the entire B&B was sparkling clean, and all breakfasts were incredible! Michael and Gerald were great hosts and very hard working. Gerald kept the garden looking lovely and Michael was a wealth of knowledge besides cooking and serving all of the delicious breakfasts. I enjoyed the efficiency of receiving the two course menu the day before and texting our selection back to our host. Each morning my husband and I sat on the porch for breakfast because we love eating outside but a formal dining room was also an option. I loved the color choices in the B&B especially our purple bathroom, the magenta paint surrounding the fireplace in the sitting room, and the chandeliers were all gorgeous too.
The restaurants that Michael recommended were spot on...our favorite was Veratina, a nearby Italian restaurant. I made all reservations well in advance and I was glad I did. I also loved the restaurant in Forsyth Park. We had lunch there twice and it was wonderful.
If you are reading this review, and love B & Bs, just book it! Do remember that it is a historic home with lovely antiques so do take the time to be respectful and enjoy the elegance. We stayed three nights and I would go back in a heartbeat for those great breakfasts (get the specials) and the rain showerhead in our suite. Great water pressure and plenty of hot water....and did I mention the king size bed was like sleeping on a cloud?!!!

Great inn, good food, but…
Unfortunately, this lovely and conveniently located B&B left a very bad taste in our mouths when a $100 charge just showed up our credit card; on inquiry, they sent the pictures below to justify it: a plug on a table, some trash neatly sepated from recyclables, a mark on a chair too small to have noticed checking in or out. (Huh?) Guests need to be aware that they will be asked to sign a document identifying a long list of required and forbidden actions with penalties for non-compliance; they should meticulously verify that they are 100% unambiguously compliant or they too may see a $100 charge slipped onto their cards for alleged "violations".
Our attempts to sort this out with the owners (i.e., refund the $100) were met with legalistic arrogance; saying we would write negative reviews were met with threats about "defamation". Further, we were insulted in writing as being "prejudiced". As seniors who have travelled a great deal, this experience was utterly and nastily unique.
So BEWARE!

As a senior person, we were not surprised you would treat the African American owner as a maid, but did hope you would abide by the rules and not damage a historic home with excess trash, stains on furniture/walls, and removing a detached plug from a wall from spilled wine. As you keep stating this is a "junk fee", you never state you didn't do it, didn't agree to the rules, but two months later, you decided you didn't want to be held accountable for your bad behavior. Another word for that is ENTITLED and NO home training. Further, threatening you will post negative untrue statements if we didn't return the monies is probably not the best way to respond to any business in the future. We wish success in your future travels at other locations and businesses, and hope you become respectful to others regardless of race and their property.
