STAY AWAY - UNSAFE
The included mini-fridge was off and open; didn't do much good for our dinner leftovers! (It was finally cold when we left around 9:30 the next morning.) The 24x7 advertised snacks included a few packaged bars, a coffee machine with almost no water (and no way to fill it as the container doesn't fit under the skin faucet), no cups to put coffee in anyway, 1 creamer, and some sugar packs. We ran out for some cold drinks and when we came back to settle in our room, she was leaf blowing outside our room for about 15 minutes (maybe do that before your guests arrive?).
We turned on the tiny TV (20ish inches) and found that not only was the screen small to begin with, but the picture was about 4" all around smaller than the screen! Moreover, if you were watching a channel with text (e.g., ESPN, Magnolia Channel), the picture was actually cropped on both sides, so you couldn't read it. The advertised DVD player was there, movies were in the hall to borrow. We settled onto the bed to watch a movie and couldn't get it to play. Called the inn keeper (who sound royally ticked off to be bothered); asked if were missing something obvious trying to use the DVD player and was told she would look into it. About 10 minutes later, she TEXTED to say they are removing the players and she doesn't have a remote; she thought the player was already gone.
Went to use the bathroom and the overhead light was either burned out or broken; you had to go all the into the room to the far side of the vanity to turn on light. There is a large water stain on the bathroom ceiling and apparent mold around the shower ceiling. As time went on, the room smelled more and more musty and felt more and more damp. The bed was "soggy" and the pillows had no support at all. After changing into PJs and removing shoes, we found the rug was gross. By the time we went to bed, we were thinking we might need to find somewhere else to stay for our second night.
When we awoke in the morning, we noticed that there was a bracket for a smoke detector, but no detector! We looked up fire code and it is absolutely required to have a WORKING smoke detector in every room, outside of every room, AND on each floor centrally located. No detector in our room or outside of it; there was one about 1/2 way down the hall. When we turned on the bathroom fan to shower, black "fuzz" floated down for several minutes. Not certain if it is just filthy or it's moldy too.
Any one or two of the other items could be understandable for a "cheap hotel", but this place advertises upscale. Still, one or two could have been "ok". The violation of fire code and putting your guests lives at risk is not! We decided to leave after breakfast and find somewhere that valued our lives and complied with state and federal code requirements.
We made certain to be up and at breakfast by 8:25 given her strong time indication the previous night. We found the dining room and sat. No good morning from our hostess, just all business asking what we wanted to drink, but not offering our choices. After a time we received our drinks. Breakfast didn't arrive until after 9:00AM. So, we got to sit with our beverages (no offer of refills while we waited 1/2 hour). Breakfast was average - nothing special, nothing horrible. The choice of the meal being a stuff mushroom (which many don't like or have allergies to) seemed a little strange, but again, nothing notable one way or another about the food when it finally arrived. We did have to ask for beverage refills - everyone was empty by the time we had food.
We asked to talk with the inn keeper after breakfast and the person didn't want to get her. So, we told that individual we were leaving, we would follow up for a refund with the inn keeper after our weekend away. As we were fighting the tree to get back in our car, the inn keeper came out and asked "What is the problem?" We mentioned that there were several things, but the most egregious was the missing smoke detector issue which violates fire code and places guests at risk. She shrugged and said it was removed because it beeped. Really? Change the battery or replace it; it is your responsibility to comply with state and federal fire codes! She didn't offer to fix it or move us; she just looked at us and said she'd never had any problems with any other guests. We said we were checking out. She just turned away shaking her head.
I contacted her with the full list of issues here, including the sentiment that one or two wouldn't have been an issue (other than the detector) and requested she refund or partially refund our stay. It has been over a week and she has not replied or issued a refund. I am the type to leave positive reviews for positive experiences and when things aren’t so positive, to assume I’m a one-off exception and deal with the issues “out of public eye” so as not to impact a business’s rating. Clearly, this business doesn’t really care about their guests nor about doing the right thing when they clearly violate codes; therefore, I am sharing this experience in the hopes that others don’t spend their money supporting a business that is unfriendly and uncaring toward their guests.
