Family room with spectacular view
What the family has done to this place is truly amazing. We enjoyed our stay in the jungle with the sound of waterfall and frog sounds. The nature is amazing vey relaxed and away from everything - a true experience in the jungle with a very hospitable family.

Trecking to your room!
I booked through booking.com where it’s very high rated above 9 and classified as a five star when clicking that in’s watch engine (!)
This is a really cool place. But it’s not five star
It’s a simple home stay outside of Ella. Need car. Houses are made of outdoor / indoor living. Very rustic tree houses with no air con etc.
Plus: the family running this place are amazing! So sweet! This is a home stay. The views are amazing. You are looking out straight a valley and jungle. Finally my kids liked the rustic tree house set up with adventure feeling
Minus: place is misrepresented in some places as a high level resort. It’s a home stay (a nice such one). It’s a huge trekking to get the room. 150 steps, some brutal. Good wake up!!! bf is very basic but view is a killer. It’s quite cold in rooms as no heating and rooms are fully exposed to outside environment including rain. Toilets are outside where monkeys come and also do their business. Mosquitos are a killer. Part of adventure.
If you look for something special try it. We liked it but it wasn’t what I expected but it was actually quite cool!

Definitely a stay for the fit
The Wood Palace is definitely NOT for anyone with any form of mobility disability. The room that we stopped in entailed negotiating over 100 steps of differing heights, hardly any rails and across a rickety wooden rickety bridge. The room was very basic and although it has spectacular views from the balcony, there was a hole in the balcony. The bathroom was large but consisted of just a basin, very basic shower and a toilet. The towels were little more than hand towels. There is no storage facilities in the form of drawers or a wardrobe in the room. In the Booking.com description, there mentions a bar. However, we asked to have a drink one evening and there was not evidence of a bar, but the proprietor said that he could get us beer. The hotel is a little out of Ella, but the propretor has a tuk tuk and for a fee will take you into Ella and pick you up again. It is certainly a peaceful location and you are in touch with nature; we had monkdys on the balcony and we also saw fireflies. I also cannot fault the hospitality and attentiveness of the proprietor and his wife but I'm not sure that this was the best experience of our visit to Sri Lanka. At the time of our visit, there appeared to be a bit of building work going on at the hotel, so maybe things have improved.

Simple and rural feel to the stay
We stayed for two nights while visiting Ella. The location is actually 2km outside of Ella down the mountain slightly, below Ella Rock.
However a tuk-tuk is 800 SLR (about £2)
Yes there are steps to the lower two rooms, 144 of them, and yes they are Sri-Lankan built so a little rustic. Our cases were carried up and down though by the hosts so not an issue for us.
The room we had overlooked the waterfall, and that was of course what you could hear all the time, no road noise.
The room is quite basic, and simple it’s made of wood, and single pane glass to the balcony.
It did not feel the best built if I’m honest on the second night there was some sheeting blown by some light winds flapping away.
The host was lovely though and so was his delightful mum, she made a cracking breakfast of traditional hoppers, fruit, a juice and tea and coffee.

Terrible Terrible Terrible
everything bad you find here... To get to the room you have to go down an infinite, insurmountable and dangerous number of stairs... On top of that, they are rustic, with different sizes... And carrying suitcases... You are completely exhausted and your heart is pounding... the room doesn't have air conditioning, there's no water, there's no shampoo or soap.... And when we asked, they were surprised and gave it to their staff (diluted with water) breakfast is a laugh.... you will share the plate with other guests.... And things like butter or jam you take directly from the jar... We felt disgusted..... We were afraid of catching illnesses during our stay. the room is open, mosquitoes and even bats come in, so it is common to see bat excrement everywhere.
