Quinta Marugo is a wonderful place in the beautiful region of Alentejo. The place offers a lot of peace, given its rural location in the countryside and relaxation opportunities (pool, Yoga, sport activities). The focus on organic food production and sustainable use of resources are omnipresent, showing how tourism can become more sustainable and offer inspiration for home usage and change in behaviors.
The staff was extremely friendly and made the whole experience very personal which we highly appreciated.
The chef prepared delicious and healthy food, respecting personal preferences.
The rooms are very fine. Note there is no Wifi in the rooms but only common areas which I think is fine.

Wilderness and respite
Mid wilderness Oasis
We spent a week at Marugo for a yoga retreat with 21 participants and teachers. The space we spent most of our time was the living room & dining room area. All beautifully designed, comfortable furniture and beautiful art with many windows open to the tree shaded open spaces. You will love this place if you want to get away from city life. Meditate, take short or long hikes and blend into nature. The rooms are basic, no internet, and air conditioning, but very pleasant and modern and clean. The staff were very friendly always ready to take an extra step to meet your needs with sincere smiles. The meals were out of this world. We chose vegetarian meals; they prepared a unique menu everyday. I am sitting at the dining table for our last breakfast. Taking in the beauty of the space and biting on my last peace of the wonderful home made bread. Thank you for a wonderful week.

Nature and peace served with class and elegance
Arriving at Quinta MarUgo you immediately notice the change. The intensive olive tree fields give way to the Mediterranean scrub, with its cork trunks and eucalyptus forests. You are immersed in the Guadiana river park.
Once through the gate (I recommend your own car to explore the nearby villages) a downhill dirt road takes you to the estate. No photo can do the view justice.
The common internal spaces (the dining room and a living room with comfortable sofas and armchairs) are perfectly furnished. Objects, statues, masks and paintings of great workmanship. The "original" glimpse of the wall is beautiful and the bookcase is interesting and well-stocked.
The rooms are large with high ceilings, bright, spotless and surprisingly fresh. We thought we would suffer from the absence of air conditioning (we stayed at the end of July) and that the heat was a problem but we changed our minds, in the evening the temperature drops significantly (18 degrees) and during the day the rooms are magically cool (the fan on the ceiling is always a pleasure).
The biolake was another nice surprise. Bathing in its waters gives a pleasant sensation of Nature, you can clearly perceive the difference with a swimming pool and the biolake is definitely better!!! The deckchairs, the garden, and the tables outside are an oasis of rest for body and mind.
Ugo is a fantastic host, he immediately transmits his energy and joy. It's impossible not to empathize with him. Maryann offers interesting meditation, QiGong, breathwork and other courses, even of short duration.
With my wife it was our third trip to Portugal and we wanted to discover this more remote and less touristy area. We stayed a week during which we took beautiful walks (both on the property and outside), visited Serpa, Beja, Mina de sao Domingo, Mertola and Pias.
We had lunch and dinner both at Quinta MarUgo (excellent vegetarian cuisine with products often picked directly from the large vegetable garden) and in the restaurants that Ugo recommended to us (excellent, with fish and meat dishes).
In short, an unmissable place. Better to stay at least three or four days to fully enjoy the atmosphere and let yourself be enchanted by the beauty and peace.
Two last things: 1) take a walk at night, unmissable starry skies and 2) check the program of the "retreats" that take place at the property, we saw one and it seemed fantastic.

A perfect place to retreat, reconnect and regenerate ✨
Incredible experience! The owners are fantastic, super warm, welcoming, fun and genuinely wonderful humans. The land was beautiful with such crisp, clean and grounding energy. Yoga pagoda/Shala is divine as well as the ceremonial spaces. Loved the animals on property and horse therapy program offerings too. Their regenerative and truly sustainable mindset also sets them a part. The food is fresh, grown on property, delicious and nutritious :)
A perfect place to retreat (whether it’s yourself, a small or bigger group), reconnect and regenerate. Cannot recommend it enough .

Quinta Marugo, we will be back!
We stayed at Quinta Marugo for two nights to scout the location for the women’s retreats that we offer. Mary Ann and Ugo showed us so much attention and understood all our needs without us needing to express them. They put so much love and energy into establishing a space for personal development. The entire building was built with sustainability, elegance, and comfort in mind.
Quinta Marugo is located 10 minutes away from the next town and it’s a perfect location to completely reload your batteries. The nervous system shuts down as soon as you get out of the car. I immediately felt at home. We only planned to stay there for one night, but it turned out to be two and if we hadn't had an appointment in another city the next day, we probably would have stayed for a week.
Our room was large, and the size of the bathroom was generous. The furniture is modern but cozy. I adore the serene surroundings of the property which even includes two ponds with an otter living there. And I don't want to forget to mention the sweet spicy smell of the air in this place, which is almost beguiling.
