In the middle of nowhere....

In the middle of nowhere is this sympathetic lodge with only 3 rooms, the owner is a funny guy and we had a lot of fun, he even made for and a dinner and makes the best breakfast.

A character and a house

One character: Tony, loquacious and fluent in French. An original house; historic and wooden of Kauri. A breakfast prepared with her aromatic herbs from the garden.

Humorous host, good food and comfortable.

We selected Pheasant Lodge for both its proximity to a friend and the deal they were offering. We have no regrets.
The lodge itself is eclectic, the proprietor friendly and both were full of character. Included in the deal was an evening meal, a bottle of wine and breakfast. The meal was very much enjoyed in front of the fire and our hosts relaxed and humorous conversation came together as a lovely, and relaxing evening. The wine was good, the roast plentiful and the dessert a treat.
The room was clean, the bed comfortable and warm and a restful night was followed by a hearty cooked breakfast and excellent locally roasted coffee. Would recommend and be happy to return when next in this area.

A lodge with a difference

This has to be one of the most eclectic and fascinating lodges on North island. It is owned and run by Tony, who has made a little corner of heaven in this village. The house is crammed with items and Tony is there as a most genial and very welcoming host in what is also his home. We had seen on another review that he does provide dinner (the village has a fish and chips but little else) which we had booked and which we shared with him - and a very large stuffed pheasant on the table ! Paparoa is but 10kms from the outstanding and must visit Kauri Museum in Matakohe, which Tony has been involved with over the years.

Don't miss this B&B!

What a wonderful stay! We arrived earlier than expected, and the owner, Tony was very accommodating. The room was perfect, down to the decorative English bulldog pillow. The bed was very comfortable, and the shower worked wonderfully. The entire house is filled with beautiful and interesting antiques and art, and the outside entertaining area is filled with the sound of lovely birds and a view of the gardens. The location was great for checking out the Kaori Museum, and the countryside is beautiful. Tony is a fantastically interesting host and it was a pleasure to talk to him. He also makes a great steak accompanied by veggies fresh from the garden, and an equally wonderful breakfast! I would highly recommend a stay here. If you don't, you're missing out!
