A beautiful hotel – but too many ordinary things did not work
The hotel itself is beautiful, historic and superbly located. The public areas are elegant and spacious, the rooms generous and well maintained, and the beds are excellent. We slept extremely well. Breakfast was good, with very good egg dishes and an impressive bread selection, and the breakfast staff were friendly and attentive.
Unfortunately, the technical standard did not match the setting or the price. The advertised air conditioning was not genuinely individually controllable. In the Deluxe room temperatures reached around 26°C despite maximum cooling, particularly at night. We complained several times and were told that a technician would investigate, but there was no noticeable improvement.
The TV situation was equally surprising. Netflix and Prime were disabled on the LG Smart TV, while the HDMI ports were inaccessible, so even our own Fire TV Stick could not be connected. The second room had a rather dated built-in television. Even conventional reception was unreliable: ZDF repeatedly failed, while WDR and several other regional channels could not be received at all. Basic Wi-Fi was free, but faster internet suitable for streaming cost another €5 per night – rather outdated in 2026.
Another puzzling point concerned the Grand Deluxe room, which our booking confirmation explicitly described as wheelchair accessible. Its bathroom nevertheless had a conventional bathtub/shower with a high step in and out. For elderly or mobility-impaired guests this presents an obvious fall risk. How this qualifies as wheelchair accessible remains difficult to understand.
Breakfast cost €38 per person. It was good, but at that price we expected somewhat more variety, and charging another €7 for Eggs Benedict seemed unnecessarily penny-pinching. There was not even a complimentary bottle of water on arrival, although guests declining housekeeping received a €5 bar voucher.
The final bill of more than €2,000 was also surprisingly opaque, with accommodation charges appearing under cryptic descriptions such as “eChannel Retail”. We had to contact the hotel afterwards simply to understand the invoice.
Reception staff were polite, although when problems arose we sometimes felt that more effort went into explaining them than solving them. To the hotel’s credit, the €88 parking charges were waived following our complaints, which we appreciated.
Our two rooms cost €1,648 for four nights before breakfast. We were also surprised to learn that Hotel Elephant is now a four-star rather than a five-star hotel. There is nothing wrong with four stars, of course, but at this price level expectations are inevitably high.
Having subsequently read the hotel’s responses to other critical reviews, we noticed a rather repetitive pattern: regret is expressed, assurances are given that the matter will be discussed internally, and guests are invited to return. When similar complaints continue to appear, one does wonder whether the feedback is actually leading to change.
Hotel Elephant has everything it takes to be an outstanding hotel: history, atmosphere, an exceptional location, spacious rooms and wonderful beds. What puzzled us was not the absence of luxury, but the number of very ordinary things that simply did not work. At this price level, that makes a difference.

Great historic hotel in the old town center.
Very nice hotel. Historic. Beautiful old building.
Location is incredible, especially to attend the Christmas Market right out the front door.
Restaurants, bars and shopping literally around the corner.
Check in was easy and friendly. Staff were very kind. Lounge is comfy.
We used Bonvoy points so I can’t comment on pricing. Car park on site for 22€ for overnight.
Our room was 114. Upgraded due to being a Bonvoy Lifetime Titanium Elite member. Breakfast was included.
Room was luxurious. Nice robes and linens. Extremely quiet. Garden view. Balcony off our room but it was cold and rainy so we couldn’t use.
