A great base in Papantla for El Tajin and exploring the town

Papantla is a quiet town with charm. Staying at Hotel El Tajin, the first thing we noted is that the car park is not very close, so make sure you stop at the front, unload, then park the car (free and secure parking). Otherwise, like us, you have to drag your cases uphill for about 200m in baking heat!
The room was very comfortable and opened overlooking the street with its own balcony. There's very efficient and quiet AC and the staff are welcoming and friendly. There's a gorgeous pool inside a courtyard but only to dip as its quite small. There's a restaurant but we chose to eat out. We bought cold beers to drink on the room balcony or on the rooftop terrace.
There are plenty of eateries for breakfast, lunch and dinner, just choose one as they all seem to offer similar fare and have great views of the square and street life.
You must visit El Tajin which is pretty quiet for a major tourist destination. There loads of places to sit in the shade to watch weaver birds making their nest, listen to orioles and admire the majestic ruins. Leaving, there are several stalls selling tourist souvenirs, sombreros and clothing - all very well made and very cheap.
When navigating back to the hotel car park, trust the sat nav because the one way system takes you through narrow streets and detours around culverts and streams.

The pool is unavailable because is broken closed out of service. Our room was not the one offered in the pics but the person in charge of the property was very helpful and resolved the issue and give us a good room. Thank you. Manager very helpful and respectful. Appreciate.

Room was dated 1980. A lot of mold in the bathroom. Room spelled like mold. Worst of all the bed was hard as a slab of rock. The staff was nice.

Parking is a few streets away. Bringing the suitcases to our second floor room was difficult. Staff will help you but just inside and of course we tip them but from the parking to the hotel door was tricky. The hallway had steps in a weird shape, moving the suitcases around was a challenge.
