One of the highlights of my Mexico trip
Was initially worried when the taxi driver stopped in what looked like a fairly deserted street, took my bags out and told me that this was the place. All I could see was the big steel doors and I did not quite know what to do. But then discovered the buzzer and within seconds of pressing it, the big door opened. I was greeted by an immaculately dressed man with a huge smile. I soon learnt that this was Jorge and he is the owner of Hostal Mexteco.
Not only is his dress sense immaculate but so is his English and his hospitality. He even offered that I can pay the next day because I was worried about not finding an ATM. He carried my large bags to my colorful room on the ground floor and then took me for a tour through the property. The kitchen where breakfast is served ( I never got to do this because I was on a daily food tour to blog about the best restaurants in town). Up to the top veranda with stunning views and complete with a fridge and a microwave and a bar (you need to bring your own drinks). As most of the others reviews shared there is also a snack table, with big glass jars full of snacks, tea, proper coffee and you can even take a sip of mezcal. I sneaked around a few nights to grab a pretzel having the midnight snack craving.
My room had a small window high above me. Coming from Mexico City where I had a room with a large bay window overlooking a leafy street, I thought not being able to open a window for a bit of fresh air might be a challenge. But is was not at all. The double volume ceilings in the room makes it very airy and then there is also aircon - and at the price you pay here it is an absolute bargain. My room had a fairly sized bathroom and water was always worm. The pressure is not the greatest but I understand water is a scarce commodity in Oaxaca.
A few blocks to the right you will find a wonderful local market where you can get fresh fruit, juice and even buy some mezcal and other goodies. There is also a small shop on the street corner where I got my water from - but do not despair - if you get in late there is also a honesty counter in the hostal where you can get water from.
The hostal is very close to the centro. About 1 km to the most amazing restaurants. You are most welcome to message me for more details on where to eat - I tried to do the list of 32 of the best spots from street food to top restaurants (did not manage but got a good variety). But then again you can also ask Jorge - from his recommendations it is clear that he is a foodie with a refined taste! He also suggested the cooking class with Oscar - which was an experience in itself.
There are many other amazing areas around the hostal - apart from the centro. I was guided by the places I wanted to eat and did not do any other tours or chased after the touristy experiences. It was a truly amazing way to discover the city. It is so small that ultimately you will see everything and more.
The trip to the airport was seamless. Jorge quickly ordered a taxi (even negotiated a discount) and within 30 minutes I was checking in.
Thank you very much Jorge and team for an amazing stay. I do hope that you will slow down and really retire from the business world. And get to travel to see your daughter in Germany. And that I will be back again to finish my list of restaurants that i need to eat at in Oaxaca.
