Dream location with the best team

The time on Mabul Island was indescribable - if you're thinking about staying in Semporna and doing day trips for diving because of the money, don't do it! The accommodation is very basic, but the location and the team make up for it! Sitting on the pier in the evening and watching turtles while guitar music plays - a dream. The instructors were all very professional, but Bohan and Billy stood out for me. I did my Open Water course with Billy and with his energetic and positive manner he put the icing on the cake for every dive.

Horrible, we don't step on the site.

It's a real mess, not even paying for the most expensive room... 130 bucks a night, you save yourself, the setting is nice but the care of the facilities unfortunate. I don’t understand how even going backpacking can seem even decent, we just had breakfast and it was a fried egg and noodles with nothing.

Disappointing, designed just for diving

I found cockroaches in the shared room and the bathrooms were in very bad shape. The manager was unkind and offered no useful information about the island. The food was always the same (fried tuna, rice and some chicken sauce) and if things like eggs, fruit or hot sauce ran out, they didn’t replenish them. Some night there was a lot of karaoke noise late. Nearby beaches are not accessible without paying and the one of the lodging itself is full of trash. Clearly focused only on divers, I would not recommend it for snorkeling or resting.

Superb adventure at Mabul Backpacker

Superb adventure at Mabul Backpackers, attentive and kind staff.
Single room without basic but functional sea view
Simple and good food but too repetitive
Competent and friendly diving instructor
Beautiful dive sites on mabul and kapalai (9 dives over 4 days)

Worth the visit!!

After reading previous reviews I was slightly nervous for my time at Mabul Backpackers, however I couldn’t have been proven more wrong. I had the best time here, was fed three meals a day and the owner made sure we had a room opposite the ocean (even though we paid for a dorm) for no extra cost. The vibe here was just on point that I ended up extending my stay by 4 days and completing my open water. Was so reasonably priced compare to other places i looked into in south east Asia and the dive master acted so professional, he stayed with my friend and I way past work hours to make sure we understood the course/ requirements to past the test. I never had a problem with the gear the week I was here and can honestly say this was one of my favourite experiences during my 7 months in South East Asia.
