Very poor experience
I’ve detailed a range of other issues (and a few pros) at bottom, but the primary issue: the hotel “beds” are a rough mattress placed on a 1.5 foot wooden platform, wedged into a cubby hole off of the main room, with roughly 6 inches of wooden platform on either side and no way to simply climb in, short of sitting at the foot of the mattress and then worming your way upwards from there.
This set-up proved very difficult for my elderly parents: it was a severe challenge getting in and out of the “bed”, the cubby hole left no room to set up their CPAP machine, and it created serious anxiety all night about how to get out of bed in an emergency. To be very clear, neither of my parents are immobile, but the bed would be a challenge for anyone of advanced age, as well as anyone with a disability.
The morning after our first night, it was clear that two more nights in this situation was not remotely workable for them. I walked down to the office at exactly 11 a.m. (the time the office opened for business), advised the owner of the situation, and asked about alternative options. The owner said there were no other options, that all the rooms featured this same setup.
He proceeded to blame:
--Me, for not examining the photos online carefully enough. And it’s true, when booking the rooms, I did not zoom all the way in to each corner of every website photo to meticulously scrutinize the setup of the beds...although in fairness, that’s also not something I’ve ever *had* to do with any other hotel, ever?
--My elderly parents, sneering, as we checked out later that morning, that he was "sorry your parents didn't like the beds" (it was NOT a matter of like/dislike. my friend, it was basic accessibility), and objecting that no one had *ever* raised this issue with him. That, fwiw, appears to be bullsh*t: in looking at both TripAdvisor and Expedia since the trip, there are many references to this exact issue, several of which the owner responded to directly. In one case, in September of 2025, the owner responded to a comment on the beds with “Our website and booking platforms show detailed photos of the rooms and beds, but we do sometimes hear from older guests that the setup isn’t ideal, something we're mindful of.” What he thinks it means to be "mindful of" an accessibility problem is a mystery to me, given how indifferent and cold he was in the moment.
I stressed to the owner that my parents were unable to sleep in these rooms, that we couldn’t subject them to this for two more nights, and that we wished to cancel our reservations. He told me there was nothing he could do and no refund was possible. Initially he tried to blame this on outside booking platform policies (a common refrain when looking, in hindsight, at his responses to other negative reviews), but when I reminded him that we had booked direct through the hotel website, he pivoted and muttered something about the “busy season” and said it was the hotel policy to not issue refunds.
It’s hard to overstate how odd and unsettling things got from there. Rather than acknowledging and trying to find some kind of solution to an obvious problem, the owner simply shut down, staring at me blankly. I tried to reset, apologized for my frustration (it had been a good but stressful trip!), tried to reason with him – his hotel could not accommodate half of our party, just have a damn conversation man! – and he just shut down, staring at me blankly, repeating that there was nothing he could do based on “policy” (his policy, fwiw).
It was all chilling and bizarre, and antithetical to the most basic notions of hospitality. I’ve never experienced anything like it.
We’ve had to leave hotels early once or twice over the years, typically because of a sudden change of plans, and a refund has never been a problem (even with policies that say otherwise), although I wouldn’t begrudge a hotel in good faith charging us for a reasonable portion of the unused stay. In this case, the issue was not a change of plans, or preference, or anything in our control – the issue was that *the hotel could not reasonably accommodate our party* -- but the owner couldn't muster enough good faith to even have a conversation.
I recognize my feelings about Brewery Park are colored by this frustrating situation, but outside of those foundational issues, a few other significant red flags:
--The floor of the shower in our room was slanted so that the water could not drain, with 2+ cm of water pooling any time you showered. To drain the shower, you had to stand in the pool of water and push it with your feet towards the drain—I did this for a good 5-10 minutes to clear the shower for my companion, and even then there was a considerable amount of water remaining. I mentioned this to the owner and he said he could send someone to “squeegee” the shower, but to be clear: this problem recurred with *every* shower, and the idea of summoning a maintenance person *every* time we showered is a little absurd, especially when the front desk is open for only a handful of hours a day!
--It was almost 35 outside the day we were there and the rooms were HOT. It took some work to get the heat pump working, and although it did help, it was a weak unit and the air movement doesn’t reach the cubby-hole “bed.” Moreover, the unit was set up so that the minimum temperature was 18—this is not unreasonable on its face, but the unit was not remotely powerful enough, and it just ran meekly, never really cooling the room. The unit was not unbearable in the evening when it cooled down outside, but it was far from comfortable in that level of heat.
-- BP has been relatively transparent about the parking thing on their website (apparently because enough reviewers complained), but note that if you’re there on a Thursday/Friday, there is street sweeping overnight that complicates the parking calculus a just a little bit more.
-- This is a “hotel” in name only—no elevators, no parking, no assistance checking in, a desk that is infrequently staffed, no amenities of any kind (except for several baskets of comically overpriced snacks). And they cut every imaginable corner. No places to hang towels, bare wires everywhere, bare and scratched up walls, worn furniture (though I appreciate the shabby look this was part of the aesthetic).
--The pros? Setting aside all the other issues, the room had a nice look, and a decent amount of space (aside from the cubby bed). And the North End was a really nice neighborhood. It was an easy drive and a reasonable walk from the North End into downtown Halifax, lots of bars and restaurants and shops. We wound up spending the final two nights in downtown Halifax and that was nice too (and the proximity to things was nice in the intense heat), but we were disappointed we had to leave the North End.
