Built in the 1860s as a carriage factory, this historic inn is situated on the banks of the St. Lawrence River in downtown Gananaque, Ontario. It features a private dock.

Fantastic waterfront location and perfect place to enjoy a drink or the action on the waterfront. We had a waterfront room- very comfortable beds and good shower. Convenient parking immediately behind room. Some of the outside chairs and little tables were in need of some tlc. Breakfast (which was included) was very disappointing- limited options and all very stodgy using basic bread- no fruit, yogurt or healthy options. Insufficient waiting staff meant service was slow. Shame as a few tweaks could make this am amazing place to stay.

Bad check in, nice view, worn room
Great location on the water and walk to tour boats and town. Lovely grounds and fun place to watch boats. Reception was awful. We arrived too early and we didn’t expect to check in but hoped for a suggestion on somewhere to grab a beer and store our luggage. Woman at desk screamed “YOURE WAY TOO EARLY. WE DINT START CLEANING UNTIL 11”. Fair enough but set a bad tone. Room we had was on the ground floor with great views but people wandering by looking in. Curtains and towels were worn. Jacuzzi tub had a 1979s Livonia feel. Bed was comfy. Quite expensive for the quality.

Stunning Waterfront Views Marred by Severe Maintenance Issues and Poor Service
The good news is that the Gananoque Inn sits on a beautiful piece of Lake Ontario lakefront right in the heart of Gananoque. The property itself is well-kept and invites exploration. While the main building looks dated, the exterior shows adequate care. There is a newer, separate building of rooms situated between the main building and the lakefront that looks very appealing. Muskoka chairs and tables are lined up along the dock area, inviting you to sit and soak in the beauty. We spent two of our three evenings relaxing here with drinks, which was a true highlight.
Unfortunately, the property's natural charm does not outweigh its significant issues:
Severe Fungal Growth in the Shower: We stayed in one of the newer rooms, and our major issue was finding mushroom growth (fruiting bodies) inside our shower, along with a ring of fungus around the shower base. This is clear evidence of a hidden water leak, rotting wood, and an underlying fungal network. While the front desk cleaned up the visible evidence within hours of our report, we saw no effort to address the root source of the issue. We were deeply uncomfortable knowing we were breathing in potential mold and mushroom spores. We were neither offered a room change nor any form of refund.
Unusual Billing Practice: Most hotels slip a detailed invoice under your door on your final night, processing payment upon departure. Instead, this inn charges the full amount for all booked nights immediately upon check-in, providing very little breakdown or detail.
Subpar, Inconsistent Breakfast Service: The main restaurant only serves breakfast (lunch and dinner are handled by a separate bar). There is no buffet; instead, items are ordered from a menu showing prices that are now wrapped into the room rate. The execution was highly inconsistent. Some mornings coffee and cutlery were brought to us; other mornings we had to walk across the room to fetch our own. Basic requests were missed—our server agreed to an extra egg on our first morning, but it never arrived, and we had to forage for jam packets from nearby empty tables. Orange juice was only supplied upon request. While the food ultimately satisfied our hunger, the service was frustrating.
Untrained Staffing: We did not see a single experienced hospitality professional managing the hotel operations. The front desk, housekeeping, and breakfast staff (who doubled as room cleaners) appeared to be entirely untrained young students. For a property charging $300 a night, the level of service fell far short of standard hospitality expectations.

Filthy hotel
The location is great, but unfortunately, the hotel itself is not.
The property has been patched up in some areas, but it is clearly in need of a complete renovation. My family had complaints during our stay, and they were met with a defensive attitude rather than genuine concern. The furniture is worn out, the doors were dirty, and there was an unpleasant smell throughout the property.
The breakfast was absolutely disgusting, as was the dining room itself. Everything looked old, worn, and poorly maintained.
It feels like the owner is making money from the hotel’s excellent location without investing enough back into the property. This could be a gorgeous place with proper care, attention to detail, good taste, and a real understanding of the hospitality business—but I don’t see that happening under the current ownership.
There is no spa, and even if there were one, I wouldn’t use it for free. Also, there are no elevators, so be prepared to carry your luggage.
I would not stay here again or recommend this hotel.
