Six peaceful nights in Kyoto!
I had made this reservation in 2019, but was unable to come due to the COVID situation. But the owner, Tamy-san (Mrs Tamy) was gracious about keeping my booking until Japan opened up for tourists in 2023. I am so very glad I decided to come in 2023 and I am grateful to Tamy-san.
These are the things I loved:
The room ( I had a double room) was meticulously clean. Tamy-san vacuumed the room daily, gave a fresh towel, emptied the trash can in the room and changed bed sheets every 3 days or so. She also daily cleaned the shared bathrooms ( two rooms shared one bathroom) and the common shower room downstairs.
There was a small pantry equipped with a microwave and small toaster/oven along with cups, spoons, coffee & tea, sugar etc. I was pleasantly surprised by all she provided because I had come equipped for all eventualities.
Tamy-san is a very kind lady who makes guests feel welcome; using her English as much as possible, she tries to help with any question (in addition to all the information provided on the front desk and the bulletin board. She also gives little gifts croissants, and Japanese tea (to drink there as well as a going away present).
Tanakaya is located in a quaint quiet alley. I enjoyed walking around the area in the evening observing beautiful geisha ladies passing by. The location allowed easy access to many restaurants & bars, markets, shops, and was in walking distance to many impressive temples. There was also easu access to busses, and metro lines.
I felt very much at home at this simple abode.
The only inconvenience for me, probably, was getting used to working on the computer at a small low table while sitting on the floor. That was mainly because I had a weak back which required constant back support.
All in all, I loved my 6 nights in Tanakaya.
I was moved when the very kind Tamy-san organized a taxi for me to go catch the airport limousine and then stood outside with me at the street corner (not very warmly dressed!) to make sure I got to the airport on time.
I was truly sad to leave Kyoto and Tanakya. Tanakaya surely will be the place where I will sleep on my next visit.

Revisited after 5 years, still lovely & great value for money
In my last review from 2014 I already pointed out the great things about this simple but lovely ryokan, and I was eager to see how it would be to stay here again, 5 years later. I am happy to say that I enjoyed the stay just as much as last time, maybe even more. :)
The owner, Tamie-san, is as sweet and welcoming as ever. We got served tea and fresh fruit upon arrival while sorting out the check-in, and we even got upgraded to a larger room for the two nights we stayed here. The room we had (called "bamboo") was beautifully decorated, air-conditioned, and there was ample space for both our (very comfortable) futons and our luggage.
The shower & toilet rooms are separate and shared, and very clean and well-maintained. In the hallway there are facilities for making tea / coffee.
The location is lovely: a charming little alley right in the middle of Miyagawacho, an excellent place for strolling, admiring the tea-houses, and seeing geiko and maiko (who are, unfortunately, usually being stalked by at least a couple of "paparazzi" who disrespectfully stick cameras in their faces). From the hotel it is only a couple of minutes' walk to Gion (about 10min) and Ninenzaka (about 15min). The nearest station is Kiyomizu-Gojo (Keihan line, which passes by the Fushimi-Inari Taisha shrine).
Like with many ryokan-type hotels, you are a bit dependant on the other guests being considerate with keeping the noise levels down, since the walls and doors are very thin.
Nevertheless, I would still whole-heartedly recommend this place to anyone who is looking for an affordable and more traditional hotel experience in one of Kyoto's five geisha districts.

A perfect, simple ryokan
The rooms are simple but comfortable and the hosts lovely, giving us fresh fruit one day and a bag of green tea KitKats when we left. Excellent location for geisha spotting.
Tip - it is an old building, therefore you can hear other guests and the rooms let in a lot of light..so consider ear plugs and sleep mask if you sleep lightly.

Japanese Traditional Accomodation
The family were looking for something in the older part of Kyoto with a want to experience a more traditional stay while in Japan.
We the Tanakaya was a great find. While we were split between two rooms, the traditional sleeping mats were pretty comfortable.
The place is centrally located and an easy walk to most sights or public transport. Had a great stay.

A good ryokan in Kyoto!
I wanted to try and experience staying in a traditional japanese style room and this place fits the bill.
Location: Very good location, its a few minute walk to Gion district. You can already find / hunt for Geisha in the area.
There's a bit confusing part of the location, well at first, the main reception and the room are located in separate buildings. The address indicated is the reception but the room is on another building, if i'm not mistaken they have 2 annex bldg for the rooms. But they will guide you at first and provide map.
Room: Japanese tatami mats! It's nice to experience traditional japanese style, good for awhile, maybe few days. I'm just so used to having chairs, or elevated beds there's no comparison. My back and legs ache after awhile. =) But like i said, it's good to experience it.
Amenities: The bathroom and toilet is common. It was clean, well maintained. There's also common kitchen. Like any traditional japanese style house/room, it's small but cosy.
Staff: The lady and his son ( i think, they own the place) was nice and helpful and i might add, quite talkative for a Japanese.
