Beautiful Japanese Onsen
The highlight of my trip to the Koase Ryokan was the beautiful outdoor onsen (hot springs). This onsen was a private bath, where you reserve your desired time ahead. It was perfect for those who might not feel as comfortable with public baths but still want to experience a Japanese-style hot springs. Of course there was also an indoor bath available which didn't require a reservation.
The staff spoke good english and were also incredibly kind and attentive. They had prepared in advance for foreign guests and were happy to show me how to use a yukata (Japanese robe). The meals (dinner and breakfast) were also delicious. I felt like I was treated to an entire feast! You will not want for food.
Sleeping arrangements were futons, which is typical of most Japanese Ryokans.
I was also provided the opportunity to make soba noodles from scratch with the chef. It was a wonderful opportunity and I'm not entirely sure where else one would be able to try something like it.
For those of you looking to experience a Japanese Ryokan for the first time I highly recommend Koase.

Very friendly, very relaxing
This was the first ryokan I’ve ever stayed in, and it was amazing!!
The staff was very friendly towards foreigners, and they made a real effort to speak English the entire time (they had note cards and everything) and they were very easy to understand, so if you don’t speak any Japanese or have very limited Japanese, this ryokan will definitely work for you.
The ryokan offers a “soba making experience”, which my friend and I tried out during our stay, and it took about half an hour and involved working with a Japanese teacher to make soba from scratch. The soba my friend and I made was then served to us with dinner that night. It was really fun and really delicious.
The hotel serves 和食, Japanese style food, which included a lot of fish, so if you are a fish lover, you will love these meals. If you aren’t so into fish, there are other parts of the dinner, meat and vegetables, that you will definitely enjoy. My one night stay included both dinner and breakfast.

The outdoor one has walls to keep away prying eyes, but an open area facing towards the mountains so you get a good view while you soak. It allowed more privacy if you’re a bit shy, and outdoor onsens can be really nice in the autumn when the air is cool but the water is hot. The indoor onsen was also good, and my skin was certainly thanking me the next day.

御神楽温泉の宿
国道49号から旧上川村に向かって進むと、御神楽温泉に到達します。
手前に御神楽荘を右手に見て更に進んだ所にあります。
庭にはキャンプ場と露天風呂が併設されています。
旅館の中にある内湯は、浴槽一つのみ。一階にあり、また目の前にある庭にはテントが張られることから目隠しされており、景観はゼロです。
中は狭く、洗い場も3人分のみですが、お湯はいいです。
温度もちょうど良く、ゆっくり入れます。

落ち着く宿です
豪華な感じはありませんが、部屋数が少なくこじんまりとしていて、静かで落ち着く宿です。
スタッフの方も数人しかいないようで、同じ方が食事を部屋に運んでくださったり、布団を敷いてくださったりと忙しそうでしたが、親切な方ばかりでした。
食事は、夜は部屋食で、豆乳鍋やお刺身、天ぷら、お蕎麦など。
朝は大広間で、一人一人にきのこの釜飯が付き、おこげもしっかりできていてとても美味しくいただきました。
温泉はとろみがある優しいお湯で、身体がしっかり温まります。
部屋にお手洗いがないことと、テレビが小さいことが難点でしたが、このお値段でこの内容はお得な宿だと思います。
