Fabulous Lodge Bubaque Island Bijagos
BIJ club consists of 3 family size units on a headland overlooking a lovely beach a couple of kilometres walk from Bubaque port.
The lodge is owned and managed by Jean and his partner Isa . Jean is an amazing can do French man who created the lodge from scratch. He is a briliant host, chef, big game fishing guide and can organise tours to adjacent islands and or fishing excursions. He has two speed boats for this purpose and will liase with other hotels to reduce the cost of the boats if desired for excursions.
The rooms are spacious ,fan cooled with nets on all windows and with a sizeable balcony to sit.
There is a bar area on the headland to share a drink and a chat in the evenings.
Jean is a warm and friendly host, smart and funny with lots of interesting stories and observations. We really enjoyed his company and he makes a mean cocktail. Sadly, we did not meet his partner on this occasion as she was in town.
The lodge is a couple of kilometres walk from Bubaque port , however the walk through the town and along the coast is delightful, and easy saunter through the greenery and community there. Jean or one of his staff will generally drop you into town whenever needed.
When we were looking at where to stay- Jean was one of the few to respond to emails and Whatsapp messages which was reassuring to us. His English, like his French is excellent. His fluency made us envious as we stumble with bad Portuguese, non existent Creole, and worse French amongst our crimes.
There is the option of bed and breakfast or bed and full board. We had all of our dinners there, which we enjoyed and Jean whipping up local produce in his french fashion.
Possibly ther only issue currently (which we believe will soon be resolved) is the need to pay for everything in cash, however this is the same almost everwhere in Guinea Bissau, except in luxury resorts.
We really enjoyed our stay and hope to return one day if Australia were not so far.
