The Merchant’s House in Old Pethia, Corfu
There are places you visit, and there are places that quietly become part of you. The Merchant's House in Old Perithia is firmly the latter.
From the moment we arrived, it felt less like checking into a boutique hotel and more like being welcomed into a home lovingly woven into the history of the village. David and Marieke have created something extraordinarily rare—a place of genuine warmth, beauty, and stillness that honors both the landscape and the centuries-old stones that surround it.
Our rooms were elegant without feeling precious, filled with thoughtful details, beautiful linens, and every comfort imaginable. Every morning began with one of the finest breakfasts we enjoyed in Greece: local honey, fresh fruit, homemade breads, yogurt, excellent coffee, and ingredients that celebrated the mountain and the island. It was the kind of breakfast that invited you to linger.
But what truly makes The Merchant's House unforgettable is its setting. As the day visitors drift away, Old Perithia returns to itself. The village settles into silence, swallows wheel overhead, and dinner is only a short stroll to one of the wonderful family-run tavernas. By night, the stars seem impossibly close.
David and Marieke are exceptional hosts—not simply attentive, but deeply invested in helping guests experience the real heart of Corfu. Their recommendations, conversations, and generosity added immeasurably to our stay.
We left feeling rested in a way that is increasingly difficult to find while traveling. If you're looking for beach clubs and crowds, this isn't your place. But if you long for authenticity, history, mountain air scented with herbs, meaningful conversations, and the quiet luxury of slowing down, The Merchant's House is nothing short of magical.

Boutique Guesthouse par Excellence
We were very lucky to enjoy two nights in this beautiful guesthouse run by two great hosts, David and Marieke, who are attentive, patient and happy to explain the history of The Merchant House and the village itself.
The suite we had, The Weavers Suite, was spacious, cool, lovingly restored and very comfortable. It was lovely having the separate living area to the bedroom and the bathroom was also spacious and well equipped.
Breakfast in the morning, on the terrace, with homemade granola, yoghurt and fruits followed by their 'special' eggs was the perfect start to the day.
Relaxing on the terrace in the everning, with a drink from the 'honesty bar' completed the day in a zenned way.
If you're walking the Corfu Trail, book this in advance, for a luxurious treat on your second last day.
Regardless of the Trail, don't miss out......it's 'off the beaten track' and worth it.

Tranquil paradise
Our third stay at this stunning mountain top location and it just keeps getting better. The place has such a special atmosphere and is so calming. We have stayed in the Weavers on the ground floor and the Carpenters on the first floor, both are equally stunning. David and Marieke are utterly charming hosts who really go the extra mile to make guests welcome, i must mention the cleaner also as the rooms are literally spotless. The gin bar is a magical treat before dinner. The breakfast is a fit for champions and will set you up for the day. The tavernas in the village are just great and you can buy the best honey i have ever tasted at Vassilis shop down in the centre of the village. This is a truly special place..

Character and warm hospitality in the mountains
What a wonderful place to stay. We did a babymoon in Corfu and this was our last stop and we were treated to wonderful hospitality and lovely chats by Marieke and David. Old Perithia is a great break from the coast, is cool and filled with wonderful mountain cuisine and great walking routes. Highly recommended.

A beautiful gem in the Mountains of Corfu
We found the Merchant house by recommendation from Myrto Zirini a Potter in Corfu town. The owners are friends of hers. And if you get the chance stop into her shop in old Corfu. She is an amazing potter We knew we wanted to spend a night up in the mountains and called to see if they had any vacancies. And lucky we were that they did, about a week later we headed up into the hills and were surprised with the most lovely old town filled with ruins and the beautiful Merchant House.
David and Myrika were fantastic hosts. The room we had was beautiful and great bathrooms, very clean. We spent the day discovering the lovely little town and eating delicious food in local tavernas. The breakfast that we had in the am was fresh yoghurt , homemade granola and local honey, fruits and homemade bread and jams, fresh OJ, then we were offered a egg dish but honestly the first offerings were enough to fill us up.
What a wonderful find on our trip to Corfu, I highly recommend if you find yourself on the Island of Corfu you must make the Trip to Perithia and stay at this beautiful place.
