Where the sea blends with the sky
If you want to relax away from bustling cosmic beaches, if you are looking for peace near nature, where the sound of the waves will nourish you in the evening and will wake you in the morning, the simple, unshakable but welcoming stay in AGRIOLIKO, where the sea blends with the sky, is the ideal place! Breakfast with yogurt drained and thyme honey, eggs, coffee and fresh bread with butter and jam was more delicious than any breakfast in a luxury hotel buffet!
We thank Mrs Voula and her family for hosting us as friends in a magical place at the edge of a rock that looks like travelling in the Aegean!

A Love Affair with a View and a Calculator
Some hotels you remember for the room. Agriolykos you remember for everything around it.
The pension sits at the far end of Therma, where the village seems to run out of road, reconsider its options and surrender itself to the sea.
It is extraordinarily beautiful.
Not polished beautiful. Not the carefully choreographed Mediterranean aesthetic where someone has spent six months deciding exactly where to place three terracotta pots.
Agriolykos feels as though it simply grew there.
Trees have established themselves wherever trees apparently decided to live. Fishing nets hang from branches. Hammocks appear between rocks and sea. Old wooden chairs sit beneath enormous canopies of leaves. Stone paths wander through the property and, almost everywhere you look, the Aegean quietly appears between the branches.
There are little places to sit everywhere. Under a tree. Beside the house. On a terrace overlooking the water. Near the rocks. You could spend an entire afternoon moving from chair to chair and consider it a perfectly respectable holiday activity.
The property has apparently been in the family for generations, and its long history under one matriarch shows in the way the place feels less designed than accumulated. Trees have grown larger. Plants have multiplied. Stone walls have aged. Furniture has found its place. Generations of guests have presumably sat beneath the same branches looking at roughly the same sea.
And then you open the door to your room.
My single room was tiny. Not charmingly compact. Tiny. The bed was approximately 120 centimetres wide, leaving somewhere between half a metre and a metre of navigable territory along the side and foot of it. After a day or two, moving around the room becomes a small piece of choreography. Turn. Step. Bag. Bed. Turn again.
There were no hooks, which presented an unexpected philosophical question: if you own clothes but have nowhere to hang them, are they still clothes, or have they become furniture?
Storage was extremely limited, and one surface remained strangely sticky. I never established whether this was cleaning residue, humidity, tiny insects or simply one of those mysteries best left unsolved on holiday.
Breakfast produced another small chapter. I had originally booked accommodation including breakfast, but somewhere between reservation and arrival, breakfast had disappeared from the booking. It was still possible to order it the day before, and when it arrived, it arrived beautifully. Elegant trays were carried out to the terraces, where breakfast could be eaten beneath the trees overlooking the Aegean.
It was an enchanting idea, though I sensed it asked a great deal of whoever had to prepare and carry all those elegant trays. By the time I left, that part of the operation had visibly worn thin.
Which, in its own peculiar way, tells you something about Agriolykos.
This is not a machine. It is a small family pension in an extraordinary location, with all the personality, beauty, imperfections and occasional strain that can come with that. And sitting beneath those enormous trees with the sea below you, you forgive quite a lot.
But perhaps not everything.
My room was not consistently serviced during the stay. I mentioned it once. The response suggested this was not a subject likely to improve anyone’s afternoon, so I decided not to mention it again.
At one point I considered cancelling the remainder of my stay and moving elsewhere. Then I discovered the money would not be refunded. There are moments in travel when the universe makes the decision for you. So I stayed.
And once staying became inevitable, I did what one should probably do on a Greek island anyway. I stopped thinking about the room and surrendered to everything outside it. The sea. The thermal springs. Morning swims. Long coffees in Therma. Conversations that lasted much longer than intended. And that extraordinary garden overlooking the Aegean.
The tiny room gradually became somewhere I slept rather than somewhere I spent my holiday. Perhaps that was the secret.
The difficulty comes when beauty meets economics. Agriolykos is not inexpensive, particularly when room size, housekeeping and breakfast are taken into consideration. When I later considered returning the following summer, I discovered the price had increased further. And this is where my love affair with Agriolykos encountered a calculator.
Therma has other small pensions offering larger rooms, breakfast and good standards at considerably lower prices. Some are more centrally located. And while Agriolykos undoubtedly occupies one of the most beautiful positions in the village, fortunately nobody has yet managed to privatise the Aegean. There are other beautiful views. You simply see the sea from another angle.
I am, regrettably, not the Bank of Norway. So next time I will probably stay somewhere more central, eat breakfast, enjoy the novel luxury of walking around my bed without choreography, and spend the money I save on actually experiencing Ikaria.
Because that is the curious thing about Agriolykos. I would happily return. I would sit beneath those trees again, walk down towards the rocks, find the hammock and watch the evening light move across the sea. I would probably sit there much longer than intended.
I am simply no longer sure I would sleep there.
And perhaps that is the most useful distinction of all. A place can be memorable. A place can be beautiful. A guest can genuinely love it. And still choose somewhere else next time.

Perfect location!
This is a beautiful place just right on the beach. Amazing view, simple and quiet clean and comfy! Host is lovely and helpful.
We hade a room with a sea view which we really like. Perfect place to relax and enjoy the silence of this amazing island.

A perfect place to relax in a spectacular setting.
I stayed here 11 days in early October and am already planning to return. The location is spectacular, with a large terrace/garden offering sea views and comfortable chairs, deckchairs and (my favourite) hammocks for idling away hours in contemplation, or reading/writing/thinking. There is a library of books in many languages - every reader's idea of heaven. The manager Harris is charming, polite and extremely helpful, as is his co-worker Eleni. Rooms are perfectly nice, simple and tastefully decorated. A 5 min walk will take you to the seafront bars, restaurants, and most importantly, a unique thermal springs situated in a cave. A perfect tonic for body and mind, senses and soul...

Very rude owner.
Very rude owner talking nonsense. We went to join the yoga class and she was claiming we cannot be there (out in the field) because of covid which is not the rules in Greece. She was very intimidating and she doesn't like animals and wanted the dog to leave. I would definately avoid staying at this hotel due to this animal hater and irrational owner.
