Poignant ... a hotel in the mews after the chateau burned

Others have written about this chateau and I can't fault any of their reviews - from terrible to very good. When we arrived the Orangerie restaurant was not open. In fact, it looked like it was being used for storage (I peeked through the windows!).
We arrived by bicycle (4 of us) and no one was home; the note on the bar said to call a cellphone number, which we did. Turns out the owner was shopping for our dinner. He asked us to find our way to two rooms (3 & 4) and put our stuff in there. He still needed to finish setting out the towels and soaps in the bathroom when he returned. The rooms actually needed a bit more attention than that - the beds were not completely ready, either. The rooms and bathrooms were clean, however.
We made ourselves at home outside in the garden - which is lovely and quiet - and waited on his return. He returned and asked us when we would like dinner - we had asked for dinner at the chateau. Eight PM was agreed upon and he finished the rooms for us. We showered and cleaned up - nice facilities, clean and roomy. Did I mention, the rooms are large, too, and each (on the ground floor) has a sliding door to the outside. We rather liked that.
Dinner was presented in the large reception room - that is, where you walk in the front door to meet the host and get your keys. He cooked the dinner himself and it was marvelous: appetizer salad of sweet, baked beets, ricotta cheese, nuts and raisins over greens with a sweet/sour dressing, a main of steamed cod (not overdone at all - succulent!) and a vegetable risotto that was delicious, both tied together with a sort of sorrel-mustard sauce - heavenly. Dessert was chocolate cake with fruit that could have been better executed.
Our host was attentive, generous and amusing with a dry wit. He told the story of the chateau and, if I understood him correctly (my French, you see), he is pretty much at the end of his tether. From the glory of the chateau - built by his forebears in the 1700s from wealth derived from their textile business - to the faltering fortunes of later generations to the chimney fire in 1989, the once robust family is now reduced to just him - one man running a B&B in the old mews, now renovated to a B&B.
Look, this place isn't for everyone, I guess. But if you can accept a little uncertainty and the occasional imperfection in your life, this man is worth meeting.

Terrible experience!

Really the WORST experience I have EVER had in my life. I have travelled to many places and I really would not recommend the place to anyone!
As we were on the road we had decided to call the hotel to inform them that we would arrive late in the evening (around 10PM) and the man on the phone did not say anything besides "okay".
After driving what seemed like hours, we finally reached at 11:30PM by then I had even started having terrible back pains. We found the gates closed and a phone number to call by the bell. So I call and a man replies (he is the same man that I had on the phone earlier). He said over the phone “you said you were coming at 10 and now it is 11:30”. It felt as if it was our fault we arrived late.
So he came to open the gate so that we could enter and park the car. He looked grumpy and rather unhappy. (great first impression!)
He went inside the hotel as we started to take out our luggages from the car.
As we entered we see him standing by the reception counter. We say “good evening”, before we could even say anything more he aggressively says “Did you really think that I was going to wait for you all night?” We nicely told him “Sir that is why we called earlier to tell you that we would be arriving late.”
Shocked by the “warm” welcome, we follow him to the room.
He shows us into our room and says “ you had requested 2 twin beds”, since I was travelling with my boyfriend it seemed strange that I would booked a twin bed room so I had said “No i did not book this room type but its okay - it is not problem” and again he got damn pissed off , muttering something under his breathe and just walked out of the room slamming the door behind him. (Indeed it was absolutely MY fault as I had booked the wrong room type.)
We were supposed to stay for 2 nights but the minute that man walked out I turned to my boyfriend and said “we are NOT staying one more night. I refuse to stay an extra night.” I was not going to spend my time, energy and money on this place.
I work in the hotel business so I know that it is not the easiest of jobs but it is YOUR DUTY to provide the good service no matter what kind of day you have had.
The next day my back pain had worsened but even with all the pain I pushed myself to get the hell out. I could not stay any longer.
I will not start talking about the room because it will take me forever to write about it and I have so much negative things to say about it. We just had to take pictures and I cannot emphasis what a horrible room we got. I am not sure if he gave us the worse room in the whole place or if all the room are of the same condition.
The hotel is being sold as a “Chateau de Bazeilles” when it is not. There is a Chateau but it seems that it was under construction for YEARS. So I truly believe that you are cheating the clients by advertising you “hotel” wrongly. I had read a lot of negative reviews of this place but I believe in trying the places out for yourself - biggest mistake of my life.
From the whole experience the thing that really shocked me was the attitude of the man. It was really upsetting for both myself and my boyfriend BUT I must say that I really appreciated the apology email that was later sent to me. Thank you but it still ruined our last day of our holiday. Such a pity.

Wonderful one night stay! :-)

Our family stayed here one night when we attended a family members wedding that was also at the Chateau. It was a beautiful night, and we were so tired afterwards, so it was nice to come back to a room that was comfortable. Would totally go back!

Never to return..........................................

arrived in a rain storm, NO staff on duty, we were checked in by phone told to take keys 12 and 15 from behind the reception desk !!!! a first for me...........corridors in darkness, other rooms left open not fully serviced, it was like the hotel was closed for the season, was this August ??? I have no issue that the hotel was in bad need of an up grade in the decor but I have no time for dirty rooms with broken amenities. Shower head broken, bath /loo /shower door dirty......sink destroyed with deep chips out of it,towel rail one bar broken...towels were so old and off white..bedspread had 2 stains on it...........no internet access in room as promised ...I had one large tv in my room and another portable tv in a press below ????? a note in one empty press saying the mini bar is across the room !!!
Webpage would not let us book a single room kept changing it to a double, price difference 20 euros !!!!
The only saving grace was the dining room, food good and a nice atmosphere.
I will save my opinions on the manager I encountered the next morning till I write a full report to the Chateau assoc.
What a shame, a beautiful location , but the whole expierence left me feeling ripped off (96 euros for bed only )and very unhappy with my Chateau visit............never to return

Mixed

This place is plainly struggling - to restore the chateau itself, to keep up the grounds at to run a hotel and restaurant. The rooms are pleasant if a little weary, the breakfast was adequate redeemed by excellent juis d'orange. We did not try the restaurant. It is not well signposted.
