Exceptional Beauty, Outstanding History, and Marvelous Service!

Our first time to Egypt, and walking into the Old Cataract Hotel was absolutely amazing. From the moment we stepped inside, we were greeted with a cool drink and a warm smile, setting the tone for an unforgettable stay.
The grounds, the pool, and the rooms are just exceptional—there is beauty everywhere you look. For history lovers, this property is a dream come true.
Did You Know?
A Historic Icon: Built in 1899 by Thomas Cook, this legendary Victorian palace has hosted iconic figures like Winston Churchill, Princess Diana, and King Fouad.
Literary History: This is the exact place where Agatha Christie famously stayed and penned her classic mystery novel, "Death on the Nile."
The Name: It gets its name from the phrase "First Cataract," marking the historic boundary where the Nile River encounters the dramatic granite boulders, creating spectacular rapids just outside the hotel.
A special shoutout to the incredible staff at the pool! Simon was absolutely marvelous, taking such excellent care of us alongside the rest of the team who went above and beyond.
If you are traveling to Aswan, we highly recommend this beautiful, historic property. It is truly an experience of a lifetime.

‘Colonial’ luxury

The Old Cataract Hotel is a must visit in Aswan - it is just a superb hark back to colonial days. The surroundings are luxurious- we only called for cocktails which will cost you £22 each but well worth the experience. Taxis are a bit of an issue - they seem to rely on 1970’s Peugeot 504’s which have many of their mechanical parts missing.

The Old Cataract Aswan delight

Had afternoon tea overlooking the Nile and a wonderful guided tour of this beautiful Hotel by Nardeen who was very knowledgable and very professional. The service was excellent and efficient and the view was very special at sunset. Well worth a visit for the experience … you can book for lunch, dinner or afternoon Tea. Come smartly dressed as it is required and the ambience of the hotel is superb. If you like to “ feel” a place then book in to stay as the traditional part of the hotel particularly is splendid and very atmospheric. Thank you to Discover Egypt for organising our Egypt adventure and for Wings tours for booking our afternoon Tea here. It was something we will remember along with all the other “treasures” Egypt keeps giving.

Expensive, but a fabulous place

A wonderful hotel. We had a Nile view room in the old part of the hotel. The room was large and spotlessly clean. The bathroom was big and had a great walk-in shower.
The food is top notch and breakfast was one of the best I have ever experienced. The selection and quality of the breakfast buffet was something very special.
The pool area is lovely, with plenty of loungers and parasols and a nice little bar.
The sense of history permeates the wide corridors and it truly makes the Old Cataract a special place. Yes, it's expensive, but in my opinion, does provide value for money and a once in a lifetime experience that shouldn't be missed. Go on, do it, you won;t regret it.

Thank you for this visit which was extraordinary; we came with friends to have tea, and we were welcomed by a hostess who gave us a tour of the Agatha Christie suite.
