Beautiful bicheno
Our favourite stay in Tasmania. No penguins were able to be sighted. Our family stayed in the school house. The salus toiletries, laundry facilities and bbq, and beautiful furnishings were a highlight. Great location close to coastal walk, beach and town were great. Can’t recommend highly enough.

Quaint and comfy
Quaint, comfortable and well located. We stayed in the school house. Nice and warm either way heating, great shower and well appointed kitchenette. Upstairs two single beds perfect for children and teens and downstairs a double bed. Offstreet parking and close walking distant to shops and beach

A pleasant stay in Bicheno, the gem of Tasmania's East Coast.
We last visited Bicheno 46 years ago and on our return visit we decided to stat at the Gaol House Cottages. We booked the 'Stables' which was the perfect size for a couple.
The cottage was well equipped with a full kitchenette with a good selection of coffees and teas. Milk was provided.
The cottages are within walking distance to most facilities in Bicheno along with cafe's and restaurants. We dined at the Lobster Shack which is a busy little establishment on the boat harbour. No reservations, just show up and hope for a seat or wait until one becomes available.
There is a local pub and a Servicemans Club to have a meal and a refreshing ale.
Bicheno is a beautiful place to spend a few days, a short drive down to Swansea is worthwhile and a drive out to Coles Bay and Wineglass bay is a memorable one.
The weather was great and it was pleasing to sea sea lions (or maybe large seals) and penguins lazing of the rocks in the boat harbour.

Cozy night in the Gaol House
We were enthralled by the Gaol House and learning about all the history of Bicheno. It was a very comfortable place to stay, with a wonderful open fireplace in the lounge room. The master bed was extremely comfortable and we slept wonderfully til the sounds of the primary school across the road picked up.
The original touches of the building were wonders to us, however we’d flag that for people over 6ft tall, you’ll need to be aware of stooping to get through the jail cell doorways!
The kitchenette is more minimally stocked with amenities, but with the knockout lobster restaurant right nearby, it would be a shame to not go out for dinner anyway! There was a lovely touch of fresh milk & a complimentary bottle of rosé for us in the fridge to welcome us.
Really enjoyed our stay here and already talking about our plans to come back and visit for longer. Thank you, team!

Outstanding!
We’ve stayed at a few converted places around the world, particularly in the UK - cow shed, apple shed, tractor shed, barn, flower shed, piggery - but this was our first gaol. It was gorgeous, inside and out. The loving attention to detail - the wallpaper; a gun over the lounge fireplace; balls and chains and handcuffs; the two cells have been converted into a shower and a separate bathroom. It was a cold May when we were there, but the fireplace, though not actually that warming, made us feel warm; whereas the very effective reverse-cycle air-conditioning on heat and the electric blankets did make us toasty warm. Add strong wifi; access to a free washing machine; kitchenette with fridge, stove, microwave; tea/coffee and toiletries; powerful hot water with overhead heaters in the toilet and bathroom; and you have a lovely holiday house. Sue looked after us above and beyond; access was easy. Bicheno is a great little coastal town with terrific hot lobster rolls at The Lobster Shack; fairy penguins; and easy access to pretty Wineglass Bay. The Farm Shed, with local gin, whisky and $12 wine tasting is a 5 minute stagger up the road from the Gaol. An IGA, bottle shop, the Long Point Surf Shop and wood-fired pizzas are a stones throw away. Great local walks and the Blow Hole too.
