Decent Hotel in Nantou Area
The front desk area has a few gift shop items you could purchase (cute postcards). There really isn't anything around the hotel (you could walk out a few blocks to their streets, but the area is dimly lit, so I wouldn't recommend it). Some of the others in our group had issues with the AC being too strong.
Breakfast itself was okay, largely vegetarian and Chinese (some toast and coffee as the "western" portion). One thing I do want to call out is their vegetarian ru rou fan. It was delicious. I had never had a vegetarian version of ru rou fan, and theirs was excellent (trust me, I've had a lot of ru ro fan while in Taiwan, theirs was great). The view from the dining room is also pretty nice.
I'm not sure why this is listed and a B&B here, but it's definitely a normal hotel. From what I could tell, at least 5 other busses stayed here as well, so I think they definitely cater to bus groups. Despite the crowds, I never felt like I had to wait a long time for the elevators (which were indeed small), or was disturbed in the my room. The sound insulation was pretty good.
I would say this is probably a solid 3.5 (slightly better than average, but not "very good").

An average to slightly above average, clean & comfortable overnight tourist class lodging, visiting Sun Moon Lake
Hotel has a nice looking lobby & 2 clerks on duty when we checked in, and we're cautioned by our tour guide that 2 elevators were small & thus slow at busy group check-out time. Take into consideration the locations & surroundings, this is slightly above average overall but I would give them a very good rating for this area - not your Holiday Inn Express but on par with Best Western & Howard Johnson, and limited services on-site & the nearest 7-11 is about 3 or 4 city blocks away if you need anything, get them first before checking-in as there is no gift shops or soda machine, etc. Pack some cup-a-noodles & bakery goods are good & for late night hunger, or even crackers & energy bars. The hotel appeared to meet all local/gov't standards for fire safety & evacuations, including flashlight & escape plan and fire extinguishers are strategically located since TW is earthquake and storm prone.
All of the rooms appeared to be the same & relatively small but efficient, has 2 full sized bed that sleep 2 adults nicely & perhaps with small child too, there is no space for an extra rollaway bed. Like most TW hotel, it has digital HVAC control that can be difficult to set & use without clear instructions in any language AND it take a while to cool down for the system to work - and, apparently, the motion sensor shut down the system in the early morning hour to save energy & we woke up in a sweat (weather wasn't hot in early September for us, just high humidity). The bathroom is small but also quite functional, running hot water but there is really no hooks for clothes & towel racks are poorly designed & located if intented to be hang up & re-use. There is a hair dryer for use & 2 bottles of comp'd water included at no extra charge, instant coffee & tea bags free for use using the hot pot that run on 110 volts power - everything needed to make a MRE out of items at local 7-11 or Family Marts, etc.
Our room on the 6/F has a micro-balcony with a screen door that look out to the countryside & farm houses nearby with the fields, we did not go outside due to mosquite concerns especially in the southern TW counties (and, yes - they do bite) There's also a laundry setup on the balcony to hang & air dry clothing for those staying longer - not of use to us since we arrived after 7 PM & left after breakfast by 8:30 AM onward with our tour.
Breakfast buffet was included for our tour group but nothing worth mentioned, it was warm at best & not really very good - on the other hand, there are no McDonalds, Burger King, Dunkin Donuts or Starbucks, etc. nearby or anywhere within easy bus driving distance, 7-11 would be the next best option. It's all self-service and when finished, drop off the dirty plates & utensils yourself at the designated collection bins. Well at least coffee & expresso are machine-dispensed free, one-cup at a time so hurry if you are in a group to avoid standing in line.
Out front, there's a small local temple nearby across the street & a local food stand selling "bin dong" or boxed meals cooked family style & sold to travelers - best to avoid them as we aren't too sure how clean they are with food safety standards, etc.

Does what you need but don't expect more
Staff without shoes, no real service style, fussy, not returning passport after scanning it etc.
If you are staying. Here for sun-moon lake, this is an OK choice- but you need to question how much you'll save here vs a place closer to the lake because while it's not impossible to get there, it's not hugely convenient.

Dirty Bathroom floor
Breakfast buffet served left over dinner from previous days. Very poor.
Only one coffee machine (half broken)for the entire breakfast banquet hall.
Banquet staff are very unfriendly, no hello to guest and refused to answer question. It's because none of them understand English...sad
Obviously, lack of proper training.
