In the spring of 628 AD, Xuanzang, a prominent monk and cultural ambassador of the Silk Road of the Tang Dynasty, passed through Gaochang and became brothers with King Quwentai of Gaochang. King Gaochang invited four monks to accompany him to learn Scriptures, and funded him to travel to and from India and Tang for twenty years, thus opening the prelude to Xuanzang's journey to the West.
