Good pub food and atmosphere.
Friendly bar and bistro staff and reasonable prices.
We chose the flathead with chips and salad and a chicken caesar salad. All in all quite a good menu considering where Oberon is.
Both were pretty good. My only minor complaint was the croutons were pre-made and soft, not crispy in the caesar.
Nice atmosphere and the dining area was well heated as it was a very chilly night.

A few things that should be easy to fix...
I chose the double bed because the single had its head against the window and I didn't like the idea of the bunk beds. The mattress and pillows were very comfortable.
There are several issues not addressed by the recent refurbishment that could be fixed easily.
1. No Mirror - the room is decorated by 3 large framed pictures of a sheepdog, sheep and a frosty country morning. The sheepdog hangs over the sink. It's a lovely dog, but there should be a mirror (this is both my opinion and that of another lady I met in the shared bathroom this morning who had the same issue with her room).
2. Damp bedding. I went to bed around 11 pm but could not get to sleep and about 20 minutes in was an unhappy clammy mess. This was entirely due to a lack of warm airing. I looked for the electric blanket, which might have fixed the problem, but despit there being an electric blanket on the bed there was no outlet anywhere near the bed to plug it in. I eventually found a solution by airing the doona from the single bed for a while, then sleeping on top of the bedding and under the single doona. Thankfully I wasn't sharing with anyone so this worked fine for two nights.
3. Shared facilities. I've got no problem with sharing a bathroom, but when there are two shower cubicles that open directly into the bathroom space and neither has a shelf for clothes, just a high hook that may or may not keep your clothes out of the spray zone, I wonder what the designers were thinking. The showers are good, but I think the only way to manage the lack of separation for clothes is to wear what used to be quaintly called a housecoat. I, and the other lady I talked to, wore PJ bottoms and a t-shirt or top, which can't be managed dry without opening the shower door, cue possible embarrasment.

The Worst!
We stayed here in winter, 5degrees outside. The hotel was really cold when we walked in. So she put on the heating. When I say heating, don't be fooled. It's barely noticeable because it's so cold in this hotel that you still need all your scarves and winter jackets INSIDE.
If you're brave enough to try for the showers, expect icy floors, and a 10 min wait for hot water (no exaggeration). There is no heating in the bathroom, so it's like having a shower outdoors (because the exhaust fan is on too, blowing cold air), then doing an icy dance to get dressed. It keeps their water bill down I suppose.
When we woke up they'd turned off the heating overnight and so it was really freaking cold. How stingy!
And the noise! My goodness, I've stayed in plenty of pubs and you can barely even hear the noise from the pub area. This is not one of them. If you have young kids, that are light sleepers, do not stay here. Karaoke with 80s songs at 10pm is quite loud.
The beds however are luxurious and warm.
In summer or warmer weather this might have been a nice stay. For $120 a night, I would have expected to be warm at least. Not asking for 25 degrees, but above 15 would have been nice!

Bargain basement accommodation overpriced
Upon arriving, firstly there was no obvious/unlocked accommodation entrance, so we entered the bar clutching our baggage, and instantly felt the yes of the patrons on us. I waited to be served at the bar, and asked the lady about checking into accommodation, and I was asked to go to the other side of the bar, through a passageway. There they had a computer with accommodation booking details, and I paid for the booking. I was not given any guidance, except that I was to go upstairs, and where approx my room was. No mention of facilities, wifi passwords, etc.
Room: large with nice beds, but the window didn't lock, and there was no easy way to cool the room after a hot day so sleeping was difficult in the warmth (no aircon or fan) - limited powerpoints for charging (one PowerPoint with powerboard next to one of the beds in a family room)
Shared TV: not working
Shared bathroom: one means and one ladies' on the floor of 10+ rooms - a single toilet in each, and in the men's the basin was inside the shower recess, so I had to brush my teeth in the laundry area - the hot water takes about 2-3 minutes to come through, due to the aging large hotel needing pipes to come a long way to the bathrooms no doubt. Instantaneous hot water systems probably should be fitted to this property.
Noise was an issue - was woken vert late/early due to drunk patrons being ejected from the pub.
Soap was provided, but no shampoo/conditioner. Towels were provided, but no face washers.
Free wifi was advertised, but not provided. No information sheet was provided in rooms, and would have been a nice touch given the staffs inability to provide any general guidance.
