The room was good and the hotel was not far from the central area. We picked it mainly because it had free car parking. The parking is free but access to the small underground car park is very tight & steep, not easy if you don't have a small car.
Also we did struggle to find our way to the hotel due to the one way system

cramped room
The plus: great location to visit Rennes, well equipped room with kettle, Nespresso machine and mini fridge (quiet what's more).
Pros:
I've had a room this small twice in my life. Once there was “capsule” in the hotel name so we were not surprised. The other was in Tokyo (there too no surprise). I never thought that a Mercure hotel in a provincial town not particularly affected by the real estate boom (?) would fit into the winning third. Unlike the other two experiences, the room I was in was supposedly a double room, this hotel comes first in the category of the smallest double room (I wish a good stay to couples who will visit the same room).
-not really common facilities such as gym or spa. It is still optional of course in this category but it will make a place not to sit on the bed with the wall 30cm in front of you.
– the staff is goodwill but not very organised, on Friday I ask if I will be able to benefit from a late check-out on Sunday and it takes 10 minutes to get a positive response, and on Sunday I am called to my room in the early afternoon to ask why I am still here.
I'm sure there are good hotels to visit Rennes but this one is not. Where then if there are none you really have to consider going elsewhere, for the same comfort you could be in Tokyo where you will have more to do than in the center of Rennes.

Disappointing
Great location (transport, restaurants, city center). Room quite spacious, comfortable bedding. Breakfast quite varied with fresh products.
No heating in the bathroom (in December). SDB radiator broke down during the 3 night stay despite repair request. A priori problem already reported by the previous customer according to the staff. Commercial gesture on the bill but disappointing about the quality of the stay.

A horrible night because of the noise
Do not come to this hotel from Thursday evening to Sunday.
There's a bar right below with the music playing and lots of people in the street
It's impossible to sleep before closing at 1:00!
The reception just tells me that I should have asked for a courtyard room...
The problem is that they won’t tell you about it when booking
If you want to sleep run away from this hotel!

AN OASIS OF TRANQUILITY IN THE HEART OF RENNES
My recent stay at the Mercure Rennes Place in Bretagne was simply perfect. Its location is unbeatable: in the heart of historic center, two steps from everything you can imagine. You cross the street and you are already immersed in the charm of the old town. In addition, the proximity to République Metro Station and a Carrefour Express make it an ideal starting point for exploring the city.
The staff was exceptionally friendly and attentive throughout. A small gesture, like the offer of an umbrella when it started raining, made me feel very comfortable. In addition, we were informed in advance of the elevator breakdown, which greatly facilitated the planning of our arrival. And they also wanted to help us get our bags into the room, a detail that is very much appreciated!
Although the main language of the staff is English and French, they always strived to understand and communicate with me as effectively as possible. I do not speak French and English I do not speak very well but as I say they tried to understand me with my English and Spanish.
The room was cozy and quiet, perfect to rest after a day exploring the city. The air conditioning and refrigerator are very practical details that I appreciate very much. As a curiosity, the bathroom is inside the room but they have the separate cup from the bathroom and the sink in a small room but everything inside the room.
What surprised me the most was the tranquility of the hotel, despite being in the center. The atmosphere was relaxed and the Guest Listing was very quiet.
In summary, Mercure Rennes Place de Bretagne is an excellent choice for those looking for comfortable, well located and friendly staff. I would definitely stay there again!
